Touring Can Duoc district to taste sausages, banh in on Tet

Nang Thom Cho Dao rice, Long Son flour, My Le noodle…are specialties in Can Duoc district of the Mekong Delta province of Long An, however sausages and banh in (dried sticky rice cakes or biscuit-like sweets made from glutinous rice) are also must-eat specialties in Can Duoc district.

Every year, on two months before Tet, people in Can Duoc town always are busy with processing sausages for sale. Ms. Ngo Thi Thanh –owner of Chin Thanh Sausage shop said sausages are sold every day before and during Tet season, each household has a various way to process sausages however we all use natural ingredients and use no chemical; just stuffed with meat, ginger, garlic and wine. Sausages, which dried under sunshine, will be more delicious than others.

Can Duoc sausages have its brand name therefore we process sausages following common standard with slogan “doing it with all heart, being not for profit”. That is reason why Can Duoc sausages have got trust from clients in HCMC and nationwide.

Ms. Huong from HCMC said I often buy dozens of kilograms of sausages to gift my relatives as I tour Can Duoc. It tastes very good, a bit sour, sweets especially it can keep a long time in dry places and not get broken.

On Tet holidays, households at Long Huu Dong and Long Huu Tay communes busily make banh in for sale. Banh in is traditional product here. Ms. Ho Thi Minh Tuyet, Long Huu Tay Commune said every year, on the 25th day of the last month of the lunar new year, her family’s members stop all works and making together banh in. It is also the time to meet all members on Tet occasion. I often make around 500 cakes to present to my relatives. It is our family’s traditional style that maintained from generation to generation.

Chairwoman of Long Huu Tay Commune Women’s Union Nguyen Thi Cam Loan said mostly households in the commune make banh in and 10 households do it as their business.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Qua, My Dien hamlet, said on Tet holiday, her family has received many banh in orders from clients in the province and other provinces across over the country.

Long An People’s Committee on December 17, 2015 recognized banh in as one of four traditional cakes in the province. However, this product has still been not developed and popularized and other countries have not also known its brand name.

With Can Duoc sausages, although this product is introduced to many regions but its prices are still unequal. Ms. Nguyen Hoang Thanh Lan, Can Duoc town said she sells around VND 12,000 per kg sausage and on Tet the prices will increase up to VND 170,000 per kg. In fact, the prices also swing from VND 170,000 to 350,000 per kg.

Her family has three generations to make the sausages. “I wish I can open a workshop to process sausages in HCMC. On Tet 2018, my family process around 2 tons of sausages to supply in domestic market”, Lan added./.
