The Provincial People's Committee also assigned the Department of Science and Technology to research, propose and submit to the Provincial People's Committee a plan to register geographical indications and other intellectual property rights associated with geographical indications abroad (if any); coordinate and support Thanh Hoa District People's Committee in management, control and protection of geographical indications. The Department of Industry and Trade presides over domestic and international trade promotion plans for yams with geographical indications.

Thanh Hoa district has a yams-growing area with an area of 3,000 hectares, mainly in communes of Thanh An, Thuy Tay and Thuy Dong. In the past, farmers only planted 1 crop of yams per year, but now they can grow 2 crops per year thanks to the dyke system invested by the State. Besides, farmers are supported by the Agriculture sector to transfer science and technology, grow in the direction of VietGAP, so the yield and quality of yams increase. Currently, yams are produced and purchased in the direction of output linkage, and are consumed domestically through supermarkets and convenience stores. In addition, yams are also purchased, preliminarily processed and exported by enterprises.

Once yam is granted a certificate of geographical indication registration, it will help yam have a stable position in the market, farmers will have high income, stable output and maintain the yam-farming profession./.
