Malaysia passes anti-fake news law
Malaysia’s parliament on April 2 approved a law against fake news that will punish anyone publishing false or untrue information.

The law , which carries punishments of up to six years in prison and a maximum fine of 500,000 RM (130,000 USD), was voted through in the Parliament's Lower House with 123 votes for and 64 votes against.
Proposed by the Malaysian government, the legislation aims to deal with the spread of fake news, and protect the public from such news, while ensuring freedom of expression.
The law also stipulates that anyone who violates this law outside Malaysia for Malaysia-related information that the Malaysian government considers fraudulent will also be punished in Malaysia.
It contains provisions that allow courts to order the closure of any publication media, especially social network forums, if they are associated to fake news./.
