The reason is that vehicles are equipped with front passenger airbag inflators supplied by Takata which may have been manufactured in such a way as to have a potential for the intrusion of moisture over time. Depending on the circumstances, this could create excessive internal pressure when the airbag is deployed and cause the inflator to rupture. In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could pass through the airbag cushion material, striking the vehicle occupants and potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
TMV also recalled more than 2,000 Corolla autos manufactured from June 29, 2015-December 16, 2015; 1.182 imported Hilux autos manufactured from July 1, 2015-November 30, 2015; 46 imported Lexus NX 200t manufactured from May 25, 2015- September 30, 2015; and 254 imported Lexus RX 350 manufactured from May 25, 2015-January 6, 2016. The recall is due to a condition affecting the airbag sensors. There is a possibility that the insulation layers of the IC chips could peel over time, creating an open circuit in the IC chip.If this occurs, the airbag warning light will illuminate. Additionally, the side and front airbags may become deactivated.
The safety recall applies to owners of vehicles at no cost at Toyota service centers nationwide from March 22./.
