Strong earthquake hits Indonesia’s sea

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake jolted Indonesia’s Banda Sea on late May 6, but there was no tsunami warning issued, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The AFP news agency quoted the USGS as saying that the undersea quake struck at a depth of some 107 kilometers in the sea between Indonesia's Maluku and Timor Leste at 22:50 local time (13:50 GMT).

Meanwhile, Reuters cited the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) that the 6.9- magnitude quake was at a depth of 117 km.

Indonesia, a vast archipelagic nation, is prone to volcanic activities and earthquakes as it lies along the "Pacific Ring of Fire"./.
