From inefficient rice fields to seedless lime gardens
Implementing the policy of converting crop and livestock structures to meet market demand, many farmers in the border commune of Hung Dien A, Vinh Hung district have converted inefficient rice to develop crops that bring high economic efficiency.
A typical example is the seedless lime growing model of Mr. Pham Van Be (Go Xoai hamlet, Hung Dien A commune). Mr. Be shared: “Realizing that lime is a long-term crop suitable for this land, my family converted 1 hectare of inefficient rice to seedless lime cultivation. Up to now, 1 hectare of lime is bearing fruit with stable yield”.
According to Mr. Be, seedless lime trees are very suitable for local development, easy to grow, easy to care for, and bear fruit all year round. The investment time for seedless lime from soil improvement to the start of harvest is about 1 year.
Currently, the productivity of his lime garden is about 40 tons/hectare/year, the selling price ranges from 8,000-15,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, each year, his family earns a profit of more than 120 million VND/hectare.

Mr. Pham Van Be (Go Xoai Hamlet, Hung Dien A Commune, Vinh Hung District) converted 1 hectare of ineffective rice to seedless lime with high efficiency
"To grow seedless lime effectively, it is necessary to buy seedlings from reputable, quality places, ensuring that the plants are disease-free. During the process of growing, farmers must limit the use of chemical fertilizers, and use organic fertilizers that can regenerate the soil. There are 2 main pests and diseases: fruit scab and red spider mites that cause fruit spots. Therefore, lemon growers need to regularly clean the roots, prune branches and spray pesticides when the tree flowers. Herbicides should not be used because they will affect the development of the root system. Farmers should only use a lawn mower to clean the garden" - Mr. Be added.
Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vinh Hung district - Dinh Chau Phong said: Currently, the locality focuses on promoting and encouraging farmers to continue to renovate mixed gardens or convert ineffective rice fields to grow seedless lime, thereby building raw material areas to organize production linkages, ensuring output for agricultural products.
Efficiency from growing melons in greenhouses
After implementing many models with different varieties of crops and livestock but the results were not as expected, Mr. Ngo Van Bay (Kenh Giua Hamlet, Nhon Ninh Commune, Tan Thanh District) began to learn and start implementing a model of growing melons in greenhouses using drip irrigation technology.
According to Mr. Bay, more than 7 years ago, he decided to invest more than 350 million VND to turn 2 hectares of ineffective rice fields into a solid greenhouse, ensuring standards in growing melons.
Mr. Bay shared: “The growth and development process of melons is 2.5 months, equivalent to 75 days old to be harvested, after each harvest, farmers spend about 2 weeks for cleaning and can produce 4 crops continuously each year regardless of weather conditions. Currently, Mr. Bay has invested in 9 greenhouses, each greenhouse is about 2,000m2, he intercrops between the stages of melon development to have a continuous source of harvest”.

The model of growing melons in greenhouses helps Mr. Ngo Van Bay (Kenh Giua Hamlet, Nhon Ninh Commune, Tan Thanh District) earn more than 1 billion VND/year
Thanks to proper care and close monitoring of the nutritional regimen, Mr. Bay's melons grow well. After 75 days of planting, the melon garden beared more than 1 ton of fruit, weighing from 1.2-1.6 kg/fruit, selling price about 40,000-42,000 VND/kg. After deducting costs, each greenhouse brought a profit of about 100-120 million VND/crop.
Mr. Bay's greenhouse system for growing melons has outstanding advantages, helping to block rain, sunlight, and prevent insects from entering. He always implements a good nutritional regimen for the plants and only uses organic biological fertilizers, ensuring safety for clean products, protecting the health of both growers and consumers.

"Growing melons is not difficult, the difficulty is the investment capital, if you are persistent and hardworking, the melon growing model will bring the desired results. In addition, the use of drip irrigation also helps nutrients from fertilizers and water to reach the roots of the plants, meeting each stage of plant growth and not wasting irrigation water" - Mr. Bay added. Currently, the entire melon area of Mr. Bay's family is certified VietGAP. In the future, he will connect with melon growers in the commune to establish cooperatives for connecting with businesses.
Chairman of the People's Committee of Nhon Ninh commune, Tan Thanh district - Huynh Van Hong Phim informed: "The model of growing melons in greenhouses, applying drip irrigation technology of Mr. Bay has opened up a new direction in agricultural production in the locality. This is also an opportunity for farmers to learn from experience, access advanced techniques and technologies to create clean products that are safe for consumers' health".
High income from organic pomelo cultivation
Organic production is becoming a development trend in many localities aiming for sustainable agriculture. Ms. Huynh Thi Hien (Nhon Tri 2 Hamlet, Nhon Thanh Trung Commune, Tan An City) is one of the pioneers in converting to organic pomelo cultivation in the locality.

Ms. Huynh Thi Hien (Nhon Tri 2 Hamlet, Nhon Thanh Trung Commune, Tan An City) is one of the pioneers in organic pomelo cultivation in the locality
Having been involved in pomelo cultivation for more than 9 years, from the very beginning, Ms. Hien learned about organic cultivation methods to apply to her garden.
Initially, she composted chicken manure to fertilize the pomelo trees. Later, when participating in training courses organized by the Farmers' Association of Tan An City, she was instructed by engineers on more systematic organic farming methods. She also proactively went to learn more experiences in other provinces to apply in practice.
Ms. Hien said that compared to the method of growing pomelo with chemical fertilizers, organic farming is more difficult because farmers have to compost their own fertilizers. However, in return, pomelo grown organically will not have pesticide residues, helping to protect consumers' health and improve soil quality.
Currently, Ms. Hien owns 0.6 hectares of pomelo with about 250 trees, 100% of the area is cultivated organically. Each year, she harvests about 10 tons of fruit.
Although the yield does not increase much compared to the traditional method, thanks to the higher quality of organic pomelo, the selling price is better. On average, the price of organic pomelo fluctuates around 30,000 VND/kg, especially during Tet, the price can increase sharply. After deducting production costs, she earns a profit of 150-200 million VND/year.
“Pomelo grown using organic methods not only ensures the health of growers and consumers but also helps improve soil and water resources. Organic fertilizers contain all the macro, medium and micro elements that mineral fertilizers do not have. In particular, the use of organic fertilizers helps stabilize soil temperature, limit evaporation, and save irrigation water. In the rainy season, the soil also drains better, reducing the risk of flooding and excess water,” said Ms. Hien.
Chairwoman of the Farmers' Association of Nhon Thanh Trung Commune, Tan An City - Nguyen Thi Anh Hong said: “We always encourage gardeners to apply organic pomelo growing methods because it not only ensures the health of consumers but also helps farmers sell their products at higher prices.”
Boosting production and developing effective agricultural models is becoming an important driving force for agricultural development in particular and socio-economic development in general. Not only does it create a strong shift in production structure, diversify crops and livestock, and meet market demand, but it also encourages farmers to innovate their thinking and boldly apply technical advances and high technology to production, contributing to exploiting land, labor, and capital resources, protecting the ecological environment, practicing safe, clean, and green production, and promoting the development of sustainable agriculture./.
