As one of the pioneer farmers applying VietGAP standards to the dragon fruit production, Mr. Nguyen Van Gia (Hoa Binh Hamlet, An Vinh Ngai Commune, Tan An City) with more than 10 years of experience with dragon fruit has boldly converted from traditional growing methods to organic farming in the past 2 years, thanks to the enthusiastic guidance and practical support from the local cooperative.
“Previously, dragon fruits were often affected by pests and diseases, had low productivity, and each harvest did not meet expectations. Since applying the VietGAP process, the plants have not only grown well, reduced pests and diseases, but also produced beautiful, delicious fruit, especially ensuring the health of consumers,” Mr. Gia shared.
Mr. Nguyen Van Gia (Hoa Binh Hamlet, An Vinh Ngai Commune, Tan An City) has achieved higher economic efficiency after applying organic agriculture to his dragon fruit field
Currently, his family owns more than 0.4 hectares of dragon fruit with 700 pillars that are being harvested, bringing a stable and sustainable source of income. Mr. Gia added that farming according to new standards not only improves product quality but also helps reduce costs by limiting the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, contributing to protecting the health of his family and the surrounding environment.
According to Mr. Gia, applying VietGAP techniques helps reduce production costs by 20-30% by limiting the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Instead, his family also takes advantage of available manure to compost with Trichoderma biological products, both improving soil porosity and enhancing plant nutrition, significantly limiting pests and diseases.
“Every year, the cooperative supports me with 200kg of biofertilizer and 10kg of Trichoderma fungus. Thanks to that, the dragon fruit garden not only has high productivity, more beautiful and sweeter fruit, but also helps protect the environment, creating sustainable value for both farmers and consumers,” said Mr. Gia.
Currently, An Vinh Ngai Cooperative is developing 10 hectares of dragon fruit that meet VietGAP standards, aiming for sustainable organic agriculture. Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of An Vinh Ngai Cooperative - Tran Van Lap emphasized: “Converting to an organic model not only helps meet the strict standards of the domestic market but also opens up export opportunities. This is an inevitable direction to increase the value of local agricultural products”.
An Vinh Ngai Cooperative is implementing a comprehensive development strategy, from improving cultivation methods to building strong links with export enterprises. This transformation not only improves farmers' income but also brings local agricultural products far and wide, affirming its position in developing clean and sustainable agriculture./.
