Sustainable urban development

The urban development program creates motivation and direction for localities to deploy investment and construction, complete criteria and standards, upgrade existing urban areas, form and develop new urban areas sustainably.

With the attention and close direction in the process of deploying and implementing the urban development program, the appearance of urban areas in Long An has changed significantly. Many projects have been invested, urban infrastructure has been built spaciously, contributing to the development of local socio-economics, improving people's lives. Tan An City is considered the political, economic, scientific - technical, cultural center, and traffic hub of the province; Kien Tuong town is the central urban area of Dong Thap Muoi region. Hau Nghia, Duc Hoa, Ben Luc, Can Duoc, Can Giuoc are urban areas in the key economic zone of the province and the area bordering Ho Chi Minh City.

Chairman of the People's Committee of Tan An City - Vo Hong Thao emphasized that the city has just celebrated its 15th birthday. This is an important milestone in the city's development process. The socio-economic development is constantly developing, and the quality of life of the people is improving. Tan An always closely follows the policies and directives, improves the criteria and standards of the urban area. Currently, Tan An has met the standards of a type II urban area, focusing on consolidating and improving the criteria to become type I urban area. The city aims to basically meet the criteria of a type I urban area by the end of 2025, to be recognized before 2030.

In recent years, the infrastructure system, especially the traffic of Kien Tuong town, has been focused on investment and development. The town has major roads running through, namely National Highway 62, Provincial Road 819 and Provincial Road 831. The town also has Binh Hiep International Border Gate and Long An Border Gate Economic Zone in stable operation. This is a favorable condition for developing industry and services in the area; attracting domestic and foreign enterprises to invest in production and business development; improving the quality of urban criteria and standards, contributing to socio-economic development and thereby creating inter-regional connectivity.

According to Mr. Ngo Hai Phong (Ward 2, Kien Tuong town), since the urban program has been implemented, people have enjoyed many benefits. The town has a new, spacious appearance, infrastructure has been invested, and most importantly, people have stable incomes, and their quality of life is constantly improved.

Kien Tuong town focuses on consolidating and improving the criteria of type III urban area

According to Chairman of Kien Tuong town People's Committee - Nguyen Van Vu, the town is currently recognized as meeting the standards of urban type III, in line with the planning and development of the national and provincial urban systems, creating momentum for the town to soon become a dynamic urban area of the Dong Thap Muoi region of the province. According to the planning orientation, the town continues to improve the quality of the criteria and standards of urban type III; plans to develop the urban architectural space of the town to become the central urban area of the Dong Thap Muoi region of the province, commensurate with its location and potential. In addition, the town will develop 2-3 urban areas that meet urban standards according to regulations; exploiti resources and favorable conditions to attract investment in developing the infrastructure system connecting the urban network in and outside the province, etc.

According to the Department of Construction, currently, urban development in the province still has some limitations and has not met the requirements. The number of urban areas has increased but the quality is still low, the technical infrastructure and social infrastructure systems are not synchronous and are overloaded in some places. Urban development is slow, not commensurate with the position, economy and role of the province. Urban infrastructure and regional connectivity are still weak; not attracting many urban residents; investment from the budget is still low; there is no effective urban development policy; basic infrastructure (wastewater treatment, inter-regional infrastructure, social policies such as social housing) is not well-invested enough to serve people, etc.

To develop urban areas in a sustainable direction, the province focuses on planning work, in which the master plan (1/2,000) has a large orientation, is flexible and suitable. The State invests in infrastructure to mobilize contributions from urban projects, allocates budget for development and maintenance to ensure that urban areas are sufficiently operational.

In addition, the province needs to have policies to select and invite large investors with sufficient capacity for urban development; create simple procedures for urban construction permits. The State invests in key infrastructure for urban development based on available urban attraction so that Tan An City and the districts: Ben Luc, Can Giuoc, Can Duoc, Duc Hoa can become satellite cities, attracting residents, etc.

“In the coming time, the formation and development of the urban system in the province must follow the planning, meet the requirements of sustainable urban development; ensure the implementation of the roadmap set out in the orientation of the Provincial Planning approved by the Prime Minister” - Director of the Department of Construction - Nguyen Van Hung emphasized./.
