Typhoon Ewiniar causes heavy losses in Philippines

Typhoon Ewiniar caused damage of more than 21 million PHP (368,430 USD) to the agriculture sector in the Philippines, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on May 30.

Typhoon Ewiniar swept through the Philippines with heavy rains and strong winds that have killed eight people and injured eight others.

It has also affected 369 farmers and fishermen, and 292.9 hectares of farmland in the Calabarzon region and damaged 22 houses in the Eastern Visayas region.

In addition, 51,858 people in Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Central Visayas and Eastern Visayas were affected by the typhoon.

As many as 21,225 individuals were displaced after the country's first cyclone this year brought heavy rain and triggered floods. Of those, 14,816 people sought temporary shelter in evacuation centres, while 6,409 stayed with relatives or friends.

The NDRRMC said the government has already distributed more than 6.7 million PHP worth of food packs to affected families./.
