Vietnamese international students calmly 'live together' with the Covid-19 pandemic

“Being away from my family during the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak caused my relatives to worry, however, from a different perspective, the “living together” with the pandemic helped me to train myself and become more mature. This will be the most valuable and memorable time while living and studying in Italy. As long as you stay active, you can find joy everywhere”. That is the confession of Vo Thi Thao Uyen (ward 5, Tan An city, Long An province) – a Vietnamese international student of tourism management and administration, European University in Italy.

"Living together" with the pandemic has helped Thao Uyen (R, 1st row) train herself and become more mature

Graduated from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Food Industry, at the age of 25, Uyen has a stable job in Ho Chi Minh City, but the 9X girl still decided to study abroad. To prepare for this big dream, Uyen made a plan for herself by working day, night studying English at centers to improve foreign language skills. “In a foreign country, everything is new, without family and friends, I myself have to get used to the weather, food, learn to use public transport. At the beginning, I had many difficulties because people mainly used Italian”- Uyen shared.

Uyen also shared that when she just adapted to a new environment, the Covid-19 epidemic broke out in this country of the world. The common mentality of parents is not assured when their children are studying abroad in the complicated epidemic situation.

“When the epidemic broke out strongly, my relatives were very worried, every day kept calling and asking, my family advised me to go back to Vietnam, wait until the epidemic was under control, then I returned to Italy. However, I stayed. For my family's peace of mind, I show everyone that my stay is safe. Firstly, the place where I live is not near the epidemic center. Secondly, because the epidemic broke out, students were moved to study and take online exams instead of going to school (this time, some industries will be affected by practical travel and internships like tourism). Thirdly, whenever I go out to the street, I will take measures to protect myself and the community such as wearing a face mask and washing hands regularly according to regulations, especially, must always calmly overcome all difficulties. Every day, I take the time to call my family about the disease situation and my own health” - she shared more

Besides studying online, Uyen often spends time doing things she loves such as cooking, growing vegetables, reading books, watching movies, and so on instead of going out to explore tourist destinations as before.

Uyen confided: “Living away from home during the Covid-19 outbreak caused relatives to worry. However, looking at another aspect, the "living together" with epidemic has helped me train myself and become more mature. This will be the most valuable and memorable time while I am living and studying in Italy. As long as you stay active, you can find joy everywhere”.

It is known that Uyen has returned to the school, about June 2021, completed the study program. Due to the influence of the Covid-19 epidemic, the graduation time has changed compared to the original expectation. This 9X girl wishes that after graduation, she will return to Vietnam to complete her cherished plans. I wish Uyen a lot of health, your dreams will come truth soon./.
