Central Vietnam provinces race to recover from rains and floods

A quick report by the national disaster management agency showed that floods inundated over 33,000 houses, 10,000 hectares of rice and 834 hectares of aquafarms, while sweeping away and killing 164,000 heads of livestock.

The hardest hit areas were Da Nang, Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam, Binh Dinh, and Quang Ngai provinces.

Floods also damaged 13 kilometres of dykes, 111 kilometres of irrigation canals, 50 reservoirs, 11 kilometres of riverbanks, and 137 kilometres of roads.

At present, the water has retreated almost completely and the provinces were quick to restore production and stabilise the lives of those in affected areas.

According to the national weather service, medium to heavy rains are forecast for the provinces from Quang Tri and Khanh Hoa at the weekend, with rainfall reaching up to between 180mm and 250mm in the provinces from Thua Thien-Hue to Binh Dinh.

The water levels on rivers in these provinces are expected to rise again and there is a high likelihood of heavy flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas.

In Da Nang efforts are being made to clean up the environment, disinfect water and eliminate mosquitoes to prevent the outbreak of dengue fever./.
