Developing sustainable green agriculture
Green agriculture with advanced and environmentally friendly farming methods, helps protect the ecosystem. Green agriculture encourages the use of organic fertilizers, biological products and natural farming methods, helping to reduce water pollution, protect the soil, and save significant resources.
According to the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Director of Phuoc Hiep Safe Vegetable Cooperative (Phuoc Hau commune, Can Giuoc district, Long An province) - Tran Thanh Minh, the Cooperative maintains training courses on green agriculture such as how to use fertilizers and pesticides on vegetables, how to effectively compost organic fertilizers, and chemical-free farming methods.
After a period of application on vegetables, farmers have realized that farming in the direction of green agriculture not only saves input materials, enhances the quality of agricultural products but also protects the environment, prevents soil degradation and maintains the durability of plants. Since then, many sustainable agricultural and green agriculture models have been applied and spread widely by farmers.

Recently, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Can Giuoc district has focused on regularly and effectively implementing models on developing green agriculture in the direction of applying high technology. Thereby, creating a positive change in people's awareness, changing farming practices. Farmers are all aware of the benefits of using organic fertilizers, microbial organic fertilizers, and biological pesticides for crops and cultivated land. Eliminating agricultural chemicals, increasing the use of biological products, and taking advantage of developing green agriculture and natural resources in the agricultural production process help achieve better quality and increase commercial value.
Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Can Giuoc District - Nguyen Thi Hong Chau said: “To develop agriculture in a sustainable direction, the district's units coordinate with specialized agencies to regularly organize training sessions and seminars on issues related to the development of high-tech agricultural products associated with restructuring the agricultural sector for members, leaders in the whole district. In addition, the district also organizes dialogues between the Chairman of the District People's Committee and farmers on issues related to the development of agricultural products so that people can be proactive in production”. Ms. Huynh Thi Hien (Nhon Thanh Trung Commune, Tan An City) shared: “When i began organic farming, I encountered many difficulties and spent a lot of time composting, catching insects, and weeding because most of it had to be done manually. Thanks to the encouragement of the Commune Farmers' Association and the application of knowledge learned from training courses on developing green agriculture, after 9 years, the soil in the garden is loose, fertile, with few pests and diseases, the trees bear fruit with great quality. I am very satisfied with the results achieved".

It is known that Ms. Hien's garden has an area of 6,000m2, growing more than 240 grapefruit trees in the direction of green agriculture. The fertilizer for the trees is a type of home-made compost with organic ingredients such as bran dust, rice husks, cow and chicken manure, and wood ash purchased from other local production and livestock facilities. Using self-made compost helps save on cultivation costs, increase end-of-season profits, utilize waste products, and contribute to promoting a circular economy in agriculture. "The grapefruit products using green agriculture from my garden are in the process of registering for VietGAP certification," said Ms. Hien.
Many well implemented and effective models
Through the promotion and dissemination of initiatives and effective practices from the provincial and local agricultural sectors, people, businesses and cooperatives have increasingly raised awareness of the sustainability of green vegetable production. From there, many clean and environmentally friendly production models have been implemented at the grassroots level.
Phuoc Hiep Safe Vegetable Cooperative is cooperating with 111 households, of which 25 households produce according to VietGAP standards, producing safe vegetables to supply to supermarkets and schools with high requirements on food safety and product quality.
Mr. Tran Thanh Minh said: “The cooperative coordinates to deploy and implement a model of automatic, water-saving irrigation and growing vegetables in greenhouses. This model helps prevent pests and diseases that harm vegetables, thereby limiting the use of pesticides and plant protection drugs, increasing product safety”.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh (Phuoc Hau commune, Can Giuoc district) excitedly said: “After more than 10 years of participating in the cooperative, I have realized that developing green farming is the right direction, bringing sustainable efficiency. Thanks to farming in this direction, the vegetables sold on the market have high value, thereby improving the economy and life of my family”.
Catching up with the wave of green farming conversion, the Farmers’ Association of Nhon Thanh Trung commune (Tan An city) organized and implemented the model of Green garden, clean field, safe production to contribute to the process of building a green, clean, and safe countryside.
Through implementation to date, 26 households have participated with a total area of more than 2 hectares, achieving the expected results: no weeds, no waste from pesticide packaging discharged into the environment; reducing the use of chemical fertilizers, increasing the use of organic and microbial fertilizers, and making use of biological by-products.
In addition, the Association also provided 20 plastic bins to help people have a place to collect used packaging and pesticide bottles before the Department of Cultivation, Plant Protection and Agricultural Product Quality Management of the province comes to collect and destroy them.
In addition, to handle agricultural waste such as grapefruit, the Farmers' Association of Nhon Thanh Trung commune built a Green Economy, Circular Economy model, using grapefruit peels to produce grapefruit essential oil and grapefruit pulp to compost organic fertilizer after meeting the requirements.
Mr. Ngo Quoc Cuong (Nhon Thanh Trung commune, Tan An city) has 9 years of experience growing grapefruit in the direction of green agriculture
Chairwoman of the Farmers' Association of Nhon Thanh Trung commune - Nguyen Thi Anh Hong said: "The model helps reduce input costs by more than 50 million VND/hectare/year, limiting the use of chemicals to help prolong the life of the tree, protect natural resources and the health of consumers. In the coming time, the Association will focus on organizing propaganda and training to raise awareness about green agriculture in order to change farmers' awareness and consumption habits in agricultural production"./.
