Malaysia will ban the use of single-use plastic bags in forest reserves, national and state parks, marine parks, and geological heritage sites and geosites, as part of efforts to curb environmental pollution.

The decision was announced by Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad following the first meeting of the year between environment ministers and state executive councillors, which he chaired.

The ban will also apply to permanent commercial premises including supermarkets, convenience stores at petrol stations, fast-food outlets, pharmacies, and other related businesses.

However, implementation will be tailored to the capacity and readiness of individual states, the minister noted.

Nik Nazmi added that federal and state authorities will step up cooperation to combat illegal electronic waste processing activities./.
