Vietnam peacekeepers attend UN Day celebrations in South Sudan

Representatives from Vietnam’s level-2 field hospital in South Sudan attended a ceremony in Bentiu on October 24 to mark the 73rd United Nations Day, according to Quan Doi Nhan dan newspaper.

At the flag-hoisting ceremony, Vietnam’s national flag flew in the sky of South Sudan, together with that of the United Nations, South Sudan, Mongolia, Ghana, India, Cambodia and the United Kingdom, demonstrating the country’s presence at the UN peacekeeping mission in the African nation.

Delegates held two minutes’ silence to commemorate UN personnel who died for peacekeeping cause while doing duty across the world and in South Sudan.

Speaking at the event, head of the Bentiu Field Office, Hiroko Hirahara, paid tribute to the fallen peacekeepers as well as thousands of people killed during conflicts in South Sudan.

She acknowledged efforts and contributions by officers from the UN Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), UN agencies and their partners, and military and civil forces, who joined hands to bring good things to locals in the African nation.

She urged them to continue exerting efforts to serve more needy people.
