The team is in Group B, together with the continental powerhouses of defending champions, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Australia.
In the 2014 tournament, Japan had defeated Australia 1-0 in the finals, while the Republic of Korea had finished in the fourth position.

In Group A, hosts Jordan will compete against China, Thailand and the Philippines.

Two top teams of each group will advance to the semi-finals and grab their berths to compete at the World Cup 2019 finals in France. The fifth slot will go to the third-placed team, with the best result in Jordan.

The Asian Cup will be held in April 2018.

Vietnamese players will be summoned in Hanoi for training in early January under coach Mai Duc Chung. They will have a short practice course abroad during this time in Germany./.
