Defence Minister welcomes Canadian diplomat

Defence Minister General Ngo Xuan Lich has expressed his hope that Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam Deborah Paul will make greater efforts to boost defence ties between the two countries as a contribution to fostering the Vietnam-Canada comprehensive partnership.

At a reception in Hanoi on April 23 for the Canadian diplomat, Lich applauded the effective and practical development of defence cooperation between the two countries in recent times, especially in delegation exchange, dialogue consultation, personnel training, UN peacekeeping operations, marine security, terrorism and transnational crime prevention, defence industry, and settlement of war consequences.

Vietnam always backs Canada’s participation in the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM ) cooperation mechanism, he said, showing his confidence that the Canadian side will make greater contributions to promoting peace, friendship and cooperation in the region and the wider world.

For her part, Deborah Paul said her nation desires to receive support from Vietnam and other ASEAN member nations to early join ADMM.

She was appreciative of Vietnam’s UN peacekeeping activities and affirmed Canada is willing to share its experience in this work.

The ambassador pledged his best efforts to augment cooperation and friendship between the two countries, including bilateral defence ties.
