Vinh Long celebrates Ok Om Bok Festival

Speaking at the event, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Quynh Thien said the festival is the highlight of the province’s Cultural, Sports and Tourism Week, helping strengthen community bonds, preserve Khmer cultural identity and promote socio-economic development.

This year’s week-long event, held from October 30 to November 5 under the theme “explore and experience the Ok Om Bok Festival – a national intangible cultural heritage,” featured 19 cultural, sports and entertainment activities, attracting Khmer residents and visitors.

Vinh Long authorities called on all sectors and the Khmer community to continue preserving cultural heritage and promoting the province’s image and people.

Most Venerable Thach Sok Xane, Vice President of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha’s Executive Council, said Ok Om Bok, held on the full moon of the tenth lunar month, is one of the three major Khmer festivals, expressing gratitude to the Moon deity for favourable weather and good harvests.

The event featured traditional moon-offering rituals, Khmer art performances, floating lanterns and a procession around Ao Ba Om. The organising committee also presented 20 scholarships to disadvantaged Khmer students./.
