The need to promote gender equality in digital age

The digital age is creating profound changes in the way people learn, work, communicate and participate in social activities. With the ability to quickly access information on technology platforms, women have more opportunities to overcome traditional barriers, improve their capacity, increase economic autonomy and participate more actively in political and social life. However, along with those opportunities come many challenges.

Gender equality in the digital age

Every year, the province organizes the Action Month for Gender Equality and prevention and response to gender-based violence. In 2025, the Action Month was implemented with the theme "Gender equality and safety for women in the digital age" to enhance the role and responsibility of all levels and sectors and mobilize the combined strength of the entire political system and society in implementing gender equality, while focusing on protecting the safety of women and girls from risks in cyberspace.

The progarm also encourages women to boldly apply science and technology, participate in building a safe, healthy and equal digital environment.

In recent years, gender equality work in the province has had many clear changes, in which the Women's Union at all levels plays a core role. Specific and practical activities have contributed to bringing the National Strategy on Gender Equality for the 2021-2030 period into life, creating a foundation for women to promote their role in the family and society.

In the political field, women's cadre work is prioritized. The Union at all levels proactively advises and introduces female cadres into planning, participates in training, fostering and appointing leadership positions. Thanks to that, the proportion of female delegates to the Provincial People's Council reached more than 34.43%; women participating in the Party Executive Committee at the provincial level reached 17.9%, and at the commune level reached 30.7%.

Some localities have female cadres holding key positions, showing a positive change. Vice President of the Provincial Women's Union Nguyen Thi Kim Lien said, “In the economic field, the Union at all levels has implemented many models to support production, start-ups, and sustainable poverty reduction. The total outstanding debt managed by the Union reached more than 6,000 billion VND, creating conditions for thousands of women to access preferential capital. The whole province has more than 23,700 women receiving vocational training, and more than 27,000 people have been introduced to jobs. Project No. 939 on supporting women to start businesses has created many effective business models; currently, the whole province has 69 cooperatives owned by women, creating stable jobs for more than 750 female workers.”

In the social field, practical movements continue to be deployed deeply and widely, associated with building new rural areas and civilized urban areas. Over the past 5 years, the province has organized more than 13,500 communication sessions, attracting more than 333,000 participants; more than 33,000 young people have been equipped with premarital knowledge and skills to build happy families.

The models of Community Trusted Address and Safe House have been expanded to 100% of communes and wards, providing timely support to women and children who have suffered violence.

Along with that, the Provincial Women's Union focuses on promoting gender equality on digital platforms, spreading hundreds of news, articles, video clips, infographics through fanpages, websites and local media channels. More than 20,000 members have participated in training courses related to life skills, prevention of online abuse and fraud, reproductive health care, etc.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Lien added, “In the current context of digital transformation and integration, the Provincial Women's Union identifies this as an opportunity to promote gender equality and help women develop comprehensively. The Union focuses on improving digital skills for officials and members through training courses on "applying information technology to the Union's activities", providing guidance on using online platforms, supporting women in learning, starting a business, and doing business online. In addition, the Union also focuses on creating an equal learning environment, encouraging women to learn, develop themselves, and at the same time, mobilizing men to do housework so that women have the conditions to participate in the digital transformation process. All of these activities aim at the goal: Vietnamese women are confident, creative, master technology, and proactively integrate in the digital age."

Creating opportunities for women and children to develop

In addition to propaganda work, the Association at all levels also conducted many monitoring activities on the implementation of the Law on Gender Equality; the Law on Prevention and Control of Domestic Violence (amended); policies for female cadres, support for ethnic minority women and poor women. Many policy recommendations from the grassroots were sent to the authorities and were adjusted to suit the reality.

In addition, the Association also coordinated to organize medical examinations and provide free medicine for more than 2,500 disadvantaged women; mobilized more than 320,000 women to participate in social insurance and family health insurance; and presented thousands of scholarships, bicycles, and school supplies to female students in difficult circumstances.

The province also paid attention to child care, especially for girls in special circumstances. Many programs to support scholarships, bicycles, health insurance cards, periodic health check-ups, and school supplies, etc were implemented with a total budget of more than 27 billion VND.

Notably, the Godmother model has supported the care of more than 620 children in difficult circumstances, helping them have more spiritual support and learning conditions.

Taking care of girls in border areas

The above results reflect the efforts of the Women's Union at all levels and the participation of the entire political system. However, gender equality is not only the responsibility of women but requires the cooperation of the whole society.

“In fact, in the process of implementing gender equality in localities, especially in rural and border areas, there are still many difficulties and barriers. First of all, social awareness of gender equality in some places is still limited, gender stereotypes still exist, so women have few opportunities to demonstrate their capacity, participate in leadership positions or make decisions in the community. Second, the economic conditions and educational level of women in rural and border areas are still low; access to information, technology, and social services is still difficult. This limits women's ability to study, work, and develop themselves. Third, the burden of family work and responsibility for taking care of children and relatives is mainly placed on women, leaving them little time to participate in social activities or study to improve their capacity. In the face of these difficulties, the Provincial Women's Union has been implementing many synchronous solutions, focusing on promoting propaganda, raising community awareness of gender equality, changing prejudice, and promoting the role and voice of women. Support women in vocational training, loans, start-ups, access to technology and digital transformation, and create sustainable livelihoods. Coordinate with authorities, departments, and sectors to integrate gender equality goals into socio-economic development programs, especially in disadvantaged areas, ethnic minority areas, and border areas. Mobilize men to share family responsibilities so that women have more conditions to develop themselves," Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Lien informed.

In schools today, many programs and activities specifically for girls are regularly implemented, clearly demonstrating the attention of all levels and sectors. These activities contribute to supporting children to develop comprehensively, confidently, and more safely in the digital environment.

“My school is organizing flag-raising activities to disseminate knowledge about women’s health and skills to prevent and combat abuse against girls. Thanks to that, my knowledge has improved significantly, and at the same time, I also understand more about the things to keep in mind when interacting with the opposite sex, helping me protect myself better,” said Nguyen Tran Quynh Tam, a student at Le Quy Don High School.

Phung Kim Thanh Truc, a student at Tran Van Giau High School for the Gifted, said, “At school, we participate in sex education classes, organized separately for boys and girls. These classes help us better understand our bodies and psychology, respect ourselves and our friends, and thereby build a safe and healthy learning environment. In the digital age, we have many opportunities to access information technology and rich sources of knowledge both domestically and internationally. However, the development of artificial intelligence also poses many challenges, as some jobs can be replaced. If we know how to use artificial intelligence properly and reasonably, we will turn technology into a powerful support tool for learning and life; on the contrary, using it without control can pose many risks.”

In the context of strong digital transformation, Tay Ninh is facing a great opportunity to turn technology into a driving force for promoting gender equality. When women are given the opportunity to access, learn, and create on digital platforms, they will not only be able to master their lives but also contribute significantly to the sustainable, comprehensive and humane development of the province in the future./.
