Urgently overcome flood consequences

Floods from upstream combined with heavy rains and high tides damaged more than 1,500 hectares of rice, more than 397 hectares of fruit trees, 190 hectares of vegetables and hundreds of houses submerged in water, with total estimated damage of more than 45.2 billion VND. Faced with this situation, all levels, sectors and people of Tay Ninh province are urgently overcoming difficulties, restoring production and stabilizing life.

Heavy damage

The incident happened more than a month ago, but Mr. Pham Van Thanh and many households living in the dyke area of Canal 3 in Ca Na Hamlet, Tuyen Binh Commune, are still worried about the broken dyke rushing water in and submerging about 100 hectares of rice ready to be harvested.

He recalled, “Immediately after the dike broke, local authorities and people gathered to patch the dike, but there was no way to fix it because the water flowed rapidly. So all the money and efforts of farmers were swept away by the flood. My family alone had more than 3 hectares of rice flooded, with total damage of more than 60 million VND. Over the past 20 years, the flood has never been so high; people were unable to react in time.”

Mr. Pham Van Thanh lost more than 3 hectares of rice due to the flood

Near Mr. Thanh's house, Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich (Ca Na hamlet) is drying rice bought from another farmer to mill for her family. Never in her life has she thought that her family would have to buy rice to mill rice like this. Ms. Bich said, "Every year when I harvest rice, I always leave a little for my family. This time, the water came unexpectedly, and I lost everything!"

Tuyen Binh commune is one of the localities that suffered heavy damage due to the flood. The whole commune recorded more than 286 hectares of autumn-winter rice affected by more than 120 households, with a total loss of more than 6.2 billion VND. The damaged rice area was most concentrated in the hamlets of Trung Truc, Trung Mon, Lang Dao and Ca Na. In addition, the commune also recorded nearly 20 hectares of fruit trees, vegetables and more than 18,200 square meters of aquatic products affected.

In Tan Tay commune, in recent days, many apricot gardens of farmers are deeply submerged in water, at risk of great damage. Farmers are "restless" because the water has not yet receded, while the high tide in the Vam Co Tay River continues to rise.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hoang, head of the Representative Board of the Apricot Growing Craft Village of Tan Tay commune, shared, "This year's flood season, all the yellow apricot growing areas of the Apricot Growing Craft Village of Tan Tay commune were affected. On average, 5% of trees in 1 hectare of yellow apricot are lost; the remaining trees will take 6-12 months to recover, and the cost of recovery is about 12-15 million VND/hectare. Yellow apricot trees that are flooded will lose their leaves and bloom early, so it is likely that this year the apricot growers will suffer a big loss."

In addition to production losses, the 2025 flood has also disrupted the lives of hundreds of households because their houses were deeply submerged in water. Ms. Huynh Thi Mai (lVinh Chau commune) said, "Now that the water has receded, we are cleaning up our houses, but at the beginning of October, my family had to raise their belongings to avoid the water. The most pitiful are the children; they have a hard time going to school."

Community responsibility

In order to promptly support people affected by floods, localities have established inspection teams, compiled reports on the damage caused by natural disasters in the area, and prepared documents to request support for damages.

Vice Chairman of Tan Tay Commune People's Committee Tran Minh Tuan said, "The commune is reviewing, grasping and synthesizing the damage from households, especially the damage to the area of yellow apricot trees, from which there will be timely support plans, at the same time helping people overcome. Immediately after the water recedes, the commune government and functional forces increase information, propaganda, and guide people to take care of the yellow apricot garden, prevent pests and apply fertilizers to nourish the roots of the trees."

More than 288 hectares of fruit trees were affected by the flood

As of November 20, the Irrigation Department recorded an estimated total damage caused by flooding of more than 45.2 billion VND, including more than 250 houses flooded; more than 1,500 hectares of rice, 397 hectares of fruit trees, 190 hectares of vegetables, more than 100 hectares of other crops, and more than 31 hectares of aquaculture damaged.

In order to minimize the damage caused by the flood, immediately after the water receded, the Department of Agriculture coordinated with localities to organize 5 training courses on transferring scientific and technical advances, preventing and controlling pests and diseases on rice plants, and providing guidance on solutions to restore crops after flooding.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Dinh Thi Phuong Khanh shared, “The Department is directed to regularly monitor the production situation and the development of harmful organisms to promptly guide solutions for post-flood crop care and pest control. Localities need to report problems arising during the implementation process to the department for direction and resolution; strengthen training and transfer of science and technology in production. It is recommended that the People's Committees of communes and wards continue to propagate and mobilize farmers to implement many measures to care for and restore crop production after floods and heavy rains to minimize losses in productivity and quality of crops; review dykes to protect people's lives and production; have plans to reinforce and raise dykes against high tides; and regularly update weather, hydrometeorology, floods, and high tides on the website of the Provincial Department of Natural Disaster Prevention and Control to have timely and effective response measures.”

The Vietnam Fatherland Front of the province has allocated 5 billion VND to support households with heavy losses in 17 communes and wards due to floods

In addition to the participation of specialized agencies, the Vietnam Fatherland Front of the province has allocated 5 billion VND from the fund for mobilization of natural disaster prevention, control and mitigation in the province managed by the Standing Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front of the province to support households with heavy losses in 17 communes and wards to buy seedlings for reproduction and provide emergency assistance.

Mr. Tran Van Thang (Nhon Ninh commune) choked up and said, “My family is a near-poor household, mainly working for hire. We saved up for a long time to have enough money to renovate the mixed garden around the house and plant dozens of jackfruit and durian trees. However, the floodwaters rose, the garden was flooded, and all the trees died, causing damage of about 160 million VND. The commune supported 0 million VND to buy seedlings to restore production, overcome difficulties, and soon stabilize life.”

The timely and specific actions of all levels and sectors show the local government's concern and support for the people. We believe that with the consensus, determination and shared responsibility, the Party Committee, government and people of Tay Ninh will soon completely overcome the consequences caused by rain and floods, and people's lives will soon return to normal./.
