The government official made the remarks at a statistics congress held in Hanoi on December 10 in order to review the statistics work of ministries and sectors in the 2014-2018 period and outline plans for the next few years.

Deputy PM Hue emphasised that statistics is an important sector for measuring and evaluating the economy as the economy is transitioning to a market economy, noting that misinformation will “kill” decisions.

He affirmed that the Government and the Prime Minister always pay due attention to the statistics work, adding that the PM approved a strategy on statistics by 2030 and a project on enhancing the quality of statistics work.

"However, we still have to make greater efforts as the Government is preparing to review and evaluate the 10-year socio-economic development strategy of the 2011-2020 period and build a strategy until 2030, in addition to developing the national sustainable development indicators and other statistical projects on the informal economic sector, enterprise development indexes, and the population census in 2019," Deputy PM Hue said.

He also asked ministries to develop their own statistics workers to reduce the dependence on the General Statistics Office and quickly provide statistical information to Party and State leaders.

At the meeting, representatives from ministries and sectors all confirmed the crucial role of statistics work and statistical data for determining the position and size of socio-economic and defense indicators to help senior leaders in making correct decisions./.
