In 2024, the socio-economic development of the Mekong Delta achieved many remarkable results. The region has affirmed its position as the leading center for production and export of rice, seafood and fruits in the country, contributing to ensuring food security, bringing significant foreign currency revenue to the country.
Along with that, many key projects and works in the region have been deployed and built, facilitating intra-regional and inter-regional connections such as the Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang expressway, Can Tho - Ca Mau expressway, An Huu - Cao Lanh expressway.
Specifically, the GRDP growth rate in 2024 of the region reached 7.31%, higher than the national average (7%), ranking 3rd out of 6 economic regions. The total added value in 2024 of all 3 sectors is 7.46%. Of which, primary sector (agriculture, forestry, fishery) increased by 3.85%, secondary sector (industry, construction) increased by 11.18%, and tertiary sector (services) increased by 7.63%.
Gross regional domestic product of the Mekong Delta region reached 1,409.28 trillion VND, increased 11.9% compared to 2023 and accounting for 12.2% of the country. The average income per capita of the whole region reached 80.7 million VND/year, ranking 5th out of 6 regions nationwide.
Total retail sales of goods and service revenue in the whole region in 2024 increased quite well and higher than the national average (9%); of which, 12/13 localities had a higher growth rate than the national average (some localities increased compared to the same period such as: Kien Giang increased by 24%, Soc Trang increased by 18%, Long An increased by 17%, Ca Mau increased by 17%, An Giang increased by 15%).
Total state budget revenue in the whole region in 2024 is estimated at 116,707 billion VND, 5.4% higher than the estimate assigned by the Prime Minister. Of which, domestic revenue reached 109,342 billion VND; revenue from import and export activities reached 7,366 billion VND.
Regarding import and export, accumulated in the first 11 months of 2024, the whole region's export reached 25.7 billion USD, increased about 16% over the same period; import reached 12.5 billion USD, increased about 17% over the same period.
The business environment has improved, with 8/13 localities in the region reach the top 30 with the best Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI). Of which, Long An made a strong breakthrough, ranking 2nd in 2023 (after Quang Ninh province).
At the conference, representatives of ministries and branches discussed the socio-economic development situation, the implementation of activities of the Mekong Delta Coordination Council in 2024 and the work program for 2025; assessed the implementation of key investment projects in the region; proposals and recommendations on key directions, solutions and specific tasks that need to be assigned to ministries, branches and localities in the Mekong Delta.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the Mekong Delta Coordination Council - Le Thanh Long acknowledged and highly appreciated the results that the Coordination Council and localities of the Mekong Delta have achieved in recent times, especially being proactive in developing regional linkages and implementing key projects.
However, the economic growth of the region is not yet sustainable; infrastructure, especially transport infrastructure, is still limited; climate change is still complicated, greatly affecting production and people's lives; the progress of public investment disbursement for some projects is still slow; etc.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that the Regional Coordination Council and localities need to speed up the implementation of projects and plans that have not been completed; promote public investment capital; synchronously deploy approved directions, solutions, and plans; research and propose regional linkage solutions associated with ensuring water security; promote regional linkage in trade development; etc. In particular, relevant sectors must continue to implement regional planning to contribute towards the country's double-digit growth target in the coming time./.
