The information was announced at a joint meeting held between the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee and the Government in Hanoi, on August 21, to review the implementation of movements for the poor in 2017 and make preparations for the live TV programme in 2018.

According to Vice President of the VFF Central Committee, Truong Thi Ngoc Anh, the "Joining hands for the Poor" in 2017 raised nearly VND280 billion (US$12.04 million) for the poor.

In the first half of 2018, the "Fund for the Poor" has so far received total support of VND529 billion (US$22.74 million), while localities have been given over VND1.64 trillion (US$70.52 million) to carry out social welfare activities.

She said that this year’s live TV programme will continue to be maintained in order to mobilise the whole society and foreign organisations to provide aid to the needy towards the goals of poverty reduction and sustainable development.

President of the VFF Central Committee, Tran Thanh Man, said that the rate of poor households in remote, border and island areas remains high, requiring the continuation of the programme to mobilise more resources for needy people to escape from poverty.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister, Vuong Dinh Hue, spoke highly of the positive results of the programme for the poor and asked the agencies concerned to coordinate with the VFF to successfully hold the live programme in October./.
