Accelerating the embankment project in Kien Tuong Ward

In early September, the construction site of the Kien Tuong Ward embankment project is buzzing with activity. The roar of machinery, the steady stream of trucks delivering materials, and the urgency of engineers and workers all reflect a shared determination to bring the project to completion on schedule.

The anti-landslide embankment, stretching over 1 km, carries a total investment of 138 billion VND, which is sourced from the central and provincial budgets and other lawful funding channels. Launched in July 2024, the project addresses years of severe erosion that threatened dozens of households living along the Cua Dong Canal and the riverbank.

To date, much of the work is already visible: main pillars, stone embankments, pavements, fencing, and streetlights are largely in place. Only a short section along National Highway 62 remains, with construction scheduled to begin in the coming days.

According to the design, the pavement will range from 5.6 -7.5 m wide, incorporating a horizontal drainage system, decorative planters, and vertical lighting poles. Once completed, the project will not only protect essential infrastructure but also enhance the local environment, create a pleasant public space for exercise and leisure, and lay a foundation for future commercial and service development.

Mr. Tran Van Tuan, project commander and representative of Sao Do Trading JSC, shared: Over the past months, we’ve mobilised maximum manpower and equipment, working continuously to ensure progress. About 90% of the work is done. We expect to complete the project by the end of November 2025, as planned. This is not only a key measure in disaster prevention but also a landscape feature that will add value to Kien Tuong Ward.”

Previously, the Cua Dong Canal and Vam Co Tay riverbanks were considered “hot spots” for landslides. Within just a few years, large portions of the riverbank had collapsed into residential areas, threatening homes and lives.

Ms. Huynh Thi Bup, a resident living nearby, recalled: “Every rainy season, the fast current would pull away soil, putting many families in constant fear. Now that the State is investing in solid embankments, we are so relieved. Once the project is finished, our surroundings will be cleaner, more spacious, and much safer.”

Ms Bup also expressed a wish for the ageing, narrow bridge across the canal, which has been degraded, narrow, and temporary, to be replaced. “A sturdy bridge would make travel and trade more convenient and safer for everyone,” Ms. Bup emphasised.

The embankment is not only a safeguard against natural disasters; it is also an opportunity for economic growth. The family of Mr. Le Thanh Hai and Ms. Dang Thi Chau Phuong, long-time residents of Ngo Quyen Street, has used part of their home to sell drinks and breakfast. “Business used to be limited by the narrow, damp space caused by land subsidence,” Mr. Hai explained. “When the embankment is completed, the frontage will be more open, clean, and attractive. We believe more customers will come, and our family’s livelihood will improve.”

The implementation of the Kien Tuong Ward embankment project not only addresses the problem of landslides but also aligns with the province’s overall urban infrastructure development strategy and that of Kien Tuong Ward in particular. The project is expected to become a scenic highlight, creating a green, clean, and beautiful space along the canal.

According to local authorities, once completed, the area will be seamlessly connected with inner-city traffic routes while unlocking the potential for commercial and service development, attracting both residents and visitors. This is also one of the steps toward realising the goal of turning Kien Tuong Ward into a central urban hub of the Dong Thap Muoi region.

A notable feature of this project is the strong consensus and support from the local community, which has helped accelerate progress and strengthened trust and cohesion between the government and the people.

In just a few months, the Kien Tuong Ward embankment will be officially completed — not only providing peace of mind against landslide threats but also unveiling a new look for the ward. A spacious, modern, and well-planned environment is gradually taking shape, fulfilling the long-held aspirations of the local people./.
