Long An holds meeting to respond to World Environment Day

WED 2019 with the theme "Air pollution and our actions" was launched and organized by the United Nations (shortly named as UNEP), organizations and communities around the world and Vietnam aiming at calling, educating and raising awareness of the community in environmental protection and towards sustainable development.

Recently, Vietnam's economy has always achieved high growth rates, created many advantages for the process of industrialization, modernization of the country, poverty reduction, job creation, improvement of people's lives and narrowing the economic gap with countries in the region. However, along with the benefits, economic development has also caused great pressure on environmental quality, especially the air environment. Air pollution is not only a hot issue, concentrated in developed cities, industrial zones and clusters, etc., but also a concern of the whole society. Air pollution is considered as one of the leading agents seriously impacting on public health.

WED this year, Long An organizes to mobilize response and implementation on many practical and meaningful activities such as organizing propaganda, hanging posters, meetings, participating in planting trees, etc. These contribute to create green areas, minimize air pollution and protect the environment.

Vice Chairman of Long An Provincial People's Committee - Pham Van Canh called on the community, each organization, each individual to act and join hands to protect the environment with practical actions:

Firstly, state management agencies in the field of environment must further promote their roles in proposing waste management and treatment solutions, focus on air pollution treatment. They must strengthen to control emissions generated from areas of solid waste treatment in rural areas, industrial zones and clusters. They must focus on controlling dust during construction, transporting materials and waste at construction sites. They must concentrate their resources to thoroughly solve environmental pollution problems from waste and emissions which are directly affecting people's lives and health. They must strictly handle with units that violate regulations on waste management and emissions.

Secondly, they must organize activities with direct participation of the community such as the campaign to carry out environmental hygiene, collect and treat waste, garbage, not to discharge plastic waste into the environment, encourage the recycling, reproduction and reuse of plastic waste. They must launch the movement of planting trees in urban areas and residential areas. They must do propaganda to limit the burning of post-harvest agricultural waste in rural areas in order to raise the sense of responsibility of the community in the event of WED 2019.

Thirdly, they must propagandize and mobilize enterprises and production establishments to implement technological innovation, production processes and equipment at industrial production establishments to limit emissions. Simultaneously, it is necessary to increase the construction, install and operate waste gas treatment systems generated by industrial establishments, ensure no air pollution. They must mobilize community participation in monitoring emissions generated from industrial, energy, transportation, construction and other emissions sources./.
