Ministry of Industry & Trade and the Mekong Delta province of Long An jointly organized conference on January 5 themed “Evaluating environment impacts resulting from coal-fired thermal power plant in Can Duoc district’s Long Huu Dong Commune”.
Deputy director of department of electricity and renewable energy under Ministry of Industry & Trade Do Duc Quan, vice chairman of Long An People’s Council Nguyen Minh Lam, Deputy Chairman of Long An People’s Committee Nguyen Van Duoc co-chaired the conference. Many representatives from the departments, agencies in Can Duoc district attended the event.

As plan, two coal-fire thermal power plants will be put into operation in the 2024-2026 period under Decision No.1208/QD-TTg on July 21, 2011 by the Prime Minister and Decision 428/QD-TTg on March 18, 2016.
A construction plan of Long An Electricity Center is expected to be implemented at Long Huu Dong Commune, Can Duoc district and coal-fired thermal power plant will also be launched at this center.
Total capacity of two plants is 2,800 MW, ensuring to meet the increased demand for electricity in the country and the southern region which Long An has yearly been growth rate up to 15 percent.
However, in order to implement these projects, the district leaders worry about environment issues how to minimize the impact of the projects on the environment and local people’s live.
Delegates worried that two plants will effect to people’s lives
At the conference, many delegates suggested the province needed to pay attention to waste treatment, environment impacts from two above-mentioned plants, as they would start construction. Delegates worried that two plants will effect to people’s lives although clean –hi technologies would be applied in.
Representative of the ministry answered some issues saying that investors must pledge to implement environmental protection strategies as planned.
Deputy chairman Nguyen Van Duoc said the province would allow investors to implement the projects with aim at ensuring a better environment and living conditions for local people./.
