Vietnam’s traditional medicine took centre stage at the International Congress Biopharm Nonclinical Development, BioNCiD 2025, held on May 25-26 in the Cuban city of Varadero, amid growing global interest in sustainable healthcare solutions.

In a keynote address that resonated strongly with delegates, Associate Professor Dr Duong Trong Nghia, deputy director of the National Hospital of Traditional Medicine in Hanoi, presented Vietnam’s integrative approach to health care – blending centuries-old medicinal wisdom with modern clinical practices.

Nghia outlined the structure of Vietnam’s nationwide network of traditional medicine hospitals and training institutions, which produce highly skilled herbal physicians and specialists. Particularly notable was the Southeast Asian country’s progress in applying herbal remedies and traditional therapies to support cancer treatment – an area that sparked considerable interest among international delegates in attendance.

The conference, hosted by Cuba’s Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), brought together experts from across the biomedical and pharmaceutical sectors. It aimed to accelerate global collaboration in preclinical research and the development of safer and more effective drugs.

Founded in 1986, CIGB has become a regional leader in biotechnology in Latin America. It is best known for its contributions to vaccine innovation, including the hepatitis B vaccine Heberbiovac HB, the cancer therapy Heberferon, and more recently, a range of domestically produced COVID-19 vaccines./.
