World Food Day calls for action towards zero hunger by 2030

The Vietnam Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) in Vietnam held a ceremony on October 16 to mark the 38th anniversary of World Food Day and the 40th anniversary of FAO in Vietnam.

"Zero hunger" is one of 17 sustainable development goals of the UN and one of the key cooperation contents between FAO and the Vietnamese Government. Over the past 40 years, FAO has helped Vietnam to carry out 500 projects on hunger eradication, poverty reduction and food security, helping Vietnam to become one of the leading rice exporters in the world.

Speaking at the ceremony, a FAO representative said that Vietnam is a successful example in national construction and economic development. However, the country needs to undertake further efforts to ensure the sustainable development goals are met amid the effects of natural disasters, climate change and increasingly complicated trade situations in the world.

Deputy Minister of the MARD, Le Quoc Doanh, affirmed that developing agricultural production is the most effective solution to achieve the zero hunger goal and ensure food security for more than 90 million Vietnamese people, while ensuring the livelihoods of approximately 65% of Vietnamese people in rural areas and contributing 17% to the national GDP.

The official noted that the support and technical assistance of FAO will continue to play a crucial role to the green and sustainable agricultural development of Vietnam./.
