Lemon trees still give profits of hundreds of million VND per hectare

Sugar cane prices are low, so its area is continuously decreasing

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development on the situation of agricultural production in 2020, sugarcane will continue to be unprofitable, dragon fruit trees will only get into losses, some other crops, notably lemon and pineapple get high profits.

According to statistics, in the 2019-2020 crop, the sugarcane area of the province continues to decline sharply, currently only 481 hectares (equal to 10.7 percent over the same period), concentrated in two districts of Ben Luc and Thu Thua. The price of sugarcane sold in the field is very low, about 100,000 VND per ton, farmers are not profitable. The reason why the sugarcane area continues to decline is because the raw material purchasing price is too low, so people switch to other crops.

Dragon fruit from the beginning of the year until now is also not profitable

About dragon fruit trees, the their current planting area is 12,125 hectares (equal to 102.4 percent over the same period), concentrated in Chau Thanh and Tan Tru. In which, the fruit-bearing area is about 10,500 hectares, the yield in the first 9 months is estimated at 251,357 tons. White flesh dragon fruit prices range from 2,000-15,000 VND per kilo, down 10,000 VND per kilo; Red flesh dragon fruit prices range from 3,000-27,000 VND per kilo, down 10,000-17,000 VND per kilo.

According to the assessment, due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic and the price as above, from the beginning of the year until now, farmers growing dragon fruit have only lost their capital.

Lemon still gives an average profit of 40 to 150 million VND per hectare per year

Meanwhile, the area of lemon growing in the province has also increased, currently about 11,211 hectares (equal to 103.6 percent over the same period), mainly concentrated in district of Duc Hue and Ben Luc. The lemon area for fruit is about 8,892 hectares, the yield in the first 9 months is estimated at 110,998 tons. The price of lemons with seeds ranges from 6,000 to 22,000 VND per kilo and the price of seedless lemons is from 10,000 to 23,000 VND per kilo.

Although, the price of lemons with seeds decreased by 1,000 VND per kilo and seedless lemons decreased by 7,000 VND per kilo compared to the previous year, but farmers still had an average profit of 40 - 150 million VND per hectare per year. Particularly for some cooperatives and farmers growing seedless lemons and applying science and technology, the profit was estimated at 180 million VND per hectare per year.

Pineapple trees have profits from 20 to 40 million VND per hectare 

The pineapple planting area in the province is 920 hectares, mainly concentrated in districts of Thanh Hoa, Ben Luc and Thu Thua. Fruit area is 744 hectares, yield 153 quintals per hectare. Selling price is from 3,000-6,000 VND per kilo, farmers have a profit of 20-40 million VND per hectare.

In addition, some other crops such as yam (planted area is estimated at 2,830 hectares) selling price from 5,000-6,000 VND per kilo, farmers have a profit of 6-9 million VND per hectare. Sesame tree has planted area that is estimated at 2,559 hectares, selling price from 45,000-55,000 VND per kilo, people have profits from 11-15 million VND per hectare.

Cassava has the planting area that is estimated at nearly 2,000 hectares, with the selling price of 2,500-3,000 VND per kilo, farmers have a profit of 10-15 million VND per hectare./.
