Pasteur Institute in HCMC monitors prevention of Dengue fever in Long An

On September 12, Deputy Director of Pasteur Institute in HCMC – Dr. Nguyen Vu Thuong and the delegation monitored the prevention and control of Dengue fever in Long An province. Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee - Pham Tan Hoa and representatives of related departments, agencies and units worked with the delegation.

At the meeting

Up to September 2019, Long An has had 697 Dengue fever outbreaks, the handling of outbreaks reached 99 percent. The whole province has recorded 3,714 cases of Dengue fever, an increase of 3.4 times compared to the same period in 2018, an increase of 83 percent compared to the average number of cases in 5 years from 2011 to 2015. Of which, there has been 1 death case in Moi 2 hamlet, My Hanh Nam commune, Duc Hoa district. Tan An city, Duc Hoa, Ben Luc, Can Duoc and Can Giuoc districts have had many cases of Dengue fever.

In order to control the disease since the beginning of the year, the Department of Health has advised the provincial People's Committee to set up an inter-provincial delegation to supervise and inspect the prevention and control of Dengue fever in major districts. The localities have focused on propaganda; carried out 2 phases of mosquito larva-killing campaigns.

100% of hospitals and health centers have been trained in diagnosis, treatment and health care for Dengue patients. Anti-disease officials in 15 out of 15 districts, towns and cities have been trained to improve their capacity of disease prevention. Most treatment facilities have planned to collect and treat according to the Ministry of Health's regimen.

Long An Center for Disease Control has supervised the prevention and control of Dengue fever in the province. However, the handling of outbreaks has still faced difficulties in industrial parks and clusters. Some communes have not had charts and maps to monitor the disease. The collection of testing samples and surveillance of lower levels in some districts has been incomplete.

People have to eliminate unnecessary water bodies

At the working session, the delegation focused on the activities of preventing and controlling Dengue fever in localities and related branches; treatment according to new regimens at private health facilities; providing funding for chemical equipment, disease prevention and treatment equipment, and so on. Members of the delegation discussed solutions and experiences in disease prevention.

Dr. Nguyen Vu Thuong requested the provincial and local Steering Committees to synchronously and regularly prevent the disease. The situation of Dengue outbreaks has been complicated, so the province should closely monitor the mosquito larva index according to the motto “No larva, no Dengue”.

The provincial Department of Health should direct health facilities, especially private ones, to monitor cases to treat effectively; handle promptly and thoroughly outbreaks; focus on direct and indirect communication; implement mosquito larva -killing campaign. Mosquitoes breed in clean water, so people have to eliminate unnecessary water bodies.

The Education and Training sector should ask teachers to guide students in eliminating larva so that each student is a propagandist in the prevention and control of Dengue fever.

In the morning of the same day, the delegation worked on Dengue prevention and control in Duc Hoa district./.
