Vietnam chairs UNSC meeting on issues in Cyprus, Libya

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on January 30 convened a meeting under the chair of Vietnam to discuss issues in Cyprus and Libya.

The UNSC voted to approve a resolution on extending the operation of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) until July 31.

The council also listened to a report on the operation of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

Ambassador Pham Hai Anh, deputy head of the Vietnam Mission to the UN, hailed the efforts of the UN, regional organizations and relevant countries in promoting peace in Libya, especially the adoption of a joint declaration at the Berlin conference, which aims to call for an end to intervention in the Libyan situation and to promote political solutions led by Libyan people.

He also stressed the importance of ensuring political solutions led by Libyan people and called for parties in Libya to show restraint and reach a long-term ceasefire agreement.

The diplomat said Vietnam supports a resolution of the UNSC to back the implementation of the outcomes of the international conference in Berlin, Germany, on January 19.

Vietnam also highly appreciates the role and contributions of the UNSMIL, he added./.
