Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee - Tran Van Can asks all Long An people to participate in preventing and fighting against drought and salinity
The drought and salinity in 2020 will greatly affect the people’s lives and activities in the province. According to the report at the meeting, the situation of damage caused by the saline intrusion in recent time took place harshly. People harvesting rice has reduced productivity, estimated damage area is about 2,100 hectares, of which, Tan Tru district has 1,300 hectares, Thu Thua district has 800 hectares. Besides, a number of other crops are also affected with about 1,220 hectares of dragon fruits, 6,520 hectares of lemons suffer productivity losses.
As for the shortage of domestic water, Can Giuoc district is affected by the lack of clean water in rural area in the dry season 2019 - 2020 with about 7,940 households scattered in 4 communes of Tan Tap, Dong Thanh, Phuoc Vinh Tay and Phuoc Vinh Dong. It is expected that the total funding need to support emergency domestic water for the affected areas is over 1.3 billion VND.
Drought and salinity in 2020 will greatly affect the people’s production
At the meeting, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee - Tran Van Can said: “Two important issues solved in the 2020 dry season are domestic water for people and irrigation for agricultural production. Regarding fresh water for people, basically by April 30, investors will complete the connection with two receiving companies, Dong Tam Company and Can Duoc Urban Environment Company, the tasks of the two companies. The companies must ensure pipes to households. Regarding the production, the Agriculture sector and localities shall base on the implementation of agricultural capital, capital for natural disaster prevention and combat, central capital to support the construction of works for preventing and controlling drought and salinity. In particular, localities need to actively implement dredging works in the on-land canals; propagandize and mobilize the whole population to participate in preventing and fighting against drought and salinity".
According to the forecast of Long An Hydrometeorology Station, in the next few days, the possibility of salinity will continue to rise and penetrate deep into the field. It is forecast that April flows from the upper Mekong to the delta is likely to remain at low tide, saline intrusion in April in the Mekong Delta is likely to remain seriously, greatly affecting production and living. Especially, the area of Mekong river mouth from April 08 to 15, salinity depth is the largest with 4 grams per liter boundary at Vam Co rivers (Vam Co Dong and Vam Co Tay), the scope of influence from 95 -105 kilometers. It is forecasted that the ability of salinity in the delta will be much improved in May 2020, but it still has to pay attention to some unusual cases due to late rains and low upstream flows./.
