Breakthrough in high-tech application on vegetables

After more than 6 years of implementing a breakthrough program on agricultural development with high technology application in association with restructuring of the Agriculture sector, the mindset of high-tech and organic vegetable production has spread in Can Giuoc district, Long An province.

Mr. Tran Tiet Giao (Phuoc Hau commune, Can Giuoc district) has applied an automatic irrigation system to grow vegetables

Change production thinking

In recent years, Can Giuoc district is a key locality in industrial, commercial and service development with many industrial zones and clusters. Besides, the district is also known as the province's largest vegetable growing area with 34 varieties, especially spices, leafy vegetables, etc.

According to statistics of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Can Giuoc district, every year, the district produces over 1,700 hectares of vegetables, providing about 140,000 tons of vegetables to the market. However, before 2015, vegetable growing in the district was still a small-scale, unbranded and barely entered the system of restaurants and supermarkets.

Besides, the consumption market is precarious and completely dependent on traders, farmers are not proactive in the production season. Besides, the consumption market is precarious and completely dependent on traders, farmers are not proactive in the production season. On the other hand, in the context of urbanization and industrialization, human resources for agricultural production are increasingly limited; quality control and food safety for agricultural products also present certain challenges for farmers as well as the local Agriculture industry.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh (Phuoc Hau commune, Can Giuoc district) shared: “In the past, I grew vegetables mainly to sell to traders, I only knew the price of vegetables when they were harvested. Pest control is also in the traditional way, so vegetable yields are often not high and profits are also very precarious. In recent years, thanks to cooperatives to organize production, purchase, and guide farmers to apply high technology, productivity, quality and prices have been significantly improved.

According to the head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Can Giuoc district - Ngo Bao Quoc, before implementing the program of agricultural development with high technology application, in order to change production thinking, the district organized for hundreds of farmers to learn experiences in localities with strengths in vegetable production such as Lam Dong, Dong Nai, Ba Ria - Vung Tau and HCMC. At the same time, the district also regularly promotes propaganda to raise awareness for farmers as well as organizes science and technology transfer courses on high-tech vegetable production.

Thanks to the visits and training courses, high-tech vegetable growing models started to be implemented in the district. The first model is the production of watercress vegetables in a greenhouse, then there are models that use environmentally friendly fertilizers such as organic fertilizers, microbial products; models of synchronous application of net house, membrane house, automatic watering, and hydroponics; etc. Mr. Tran Tiet Giao (Long Hau commune, Can Giuoc district) said: "With the automatic sprinkler system, I just need to start the circuit breaker, the irrigation system will spray the whole 0.4-hectare vegetable garden. Thanks to that, I have more time to improve the efficiency of growing vegetables.”

In 2022, the Agriculture sector of Can Giuoc district has implemented many projects and models to encourage farmers to apply high technology to growing vegetables. Specifically, the district chose Phuoc Tien hi-tech agricultural cooperative as a model. The cooperative is supported by the province up to 50% of production costs including organic fertilizer and automatic irrigation system for 1 hectare of vegetables.

According to Director of Phuoc Tien Hi-tech Agriculture Cooperative - Tran Van Men, the cooperative has a total area of nearly 10 hectares specializing in rotating short-term vegetables. Thanks to the support of the Agriculture sector, the cooperative will build net houses, install automatic irrigation systems and grow vegetables according to VietGAP standards. "The members of the cooperative are all experienced and understand the benefits of growing safe vegetables. Therefore, the cooperative believes that applying high technology to production will bring high efficiency. We believe that this will be a momentum step for the cooperative to expand the area of high-tech vegetables in the near future," added Mr. Men.

Continue to maintain and replicate

In recent years, Can Giuoc district has focused on developing high-tech, sustainable agriculture, ensuring food safety. The district focuses on developing high-tech vegetable growing areas according to the plan in order to improve the quality and value of agricultural products. Up to now, the district has over 1,175 hectares of high-tech vegetables. The whole district has 31 cooperatives and 95 production association groups; in which, there are 10 cooperatives, 1 vegetable growing cooperative group certified to meet VietGAP standards and Xuan Huy Thinh cooperative group (Phuoc Lai commune) certified organic vegetable production. In addition, the district also has 5 supply chains of safe agricultural products.

“In order to continue to maintain and expand the area of hi-tech vegetable production, the district well implements the province's high-tech agricultural policies to promptly support farmers with funds; replicates the effective production model; cooperates with functional sectors to promote linkages in production and consumption of products along the value chain; strengthens and enhances the activities of cooperative groups and cooperatives. In addition, the district continues to invest in building infrastructure for agricultural development such as expanding the system of traffic, electricity, irrigation in the field; chooses technologies that are suitable to actual conditions and capable of replication, ensuring economic efficiency and increasing farmers' incomes "- Mr. Ngo Bao Quoc informed.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development - Nguyen Chi Thien, in recent years, the provincial Agriculture sector has focused on promoting the application of high technology in vegetable cultivation to create a source of clean agricultural products, ensure food safety and have high competitiveness in the market. Through supportive policies, it is hoped that cooperatives and farmers will produce more efficiently and achieve higher profits.

Traffic infrastructure in the high-tech vegetable growing area is invested to serve the trade needs of farmers

"When implementing the pilot models, Can Giuoc district must regularly monitor and evaluate the effectiveness to gradually expand the area of high-tech vegetables. In addition, cooperatives also need to promote trade promotion, build a safe food supply chain and find a stable output for vegetables," suggested Mr. Nguyen Chi Thien.

Besides in Can Giuoc district, the province also has high-tech vegetable models in Can Duoc district, Tan An city, etc. Besides in Can Giuoc district, the province also has high-tech vegetable models in Can Duoc district, Tan An city, etc. Most of the models are effective and increase income for farmers. These things contribute to affirm that the application of technology in production is the right and appropriate direction that should be maintained and replicated in the coming time./.

Up to now, the province has 1,829 hectares of high-tech vegetables, reaching 91.5% of the plan for the period 2021-2025. Specifically, Can Giuoc district has over 1,175 hectares; Can Duoc district has over 597 hectares and TP. Tan An has over 56 hectares.
