Vice Chairman of Long An Provincial People's Committee - Pham Van Canh said that the conference aimed to find solutions for sustainable development of fruit trees. This is an opportunity to orient, expand production, promote trade, expand consuming markets and international integration of fruit trees in Vietnam in general and Southern provinces in particular. Long An is located in the southern key economic region. In 2018, economic growth reached 10.36% - this is the highest growth rate in recent years, GRDP per capita reached VND 69 million. Agricultural production, especially fruit trees, has always been concerned by provincial leaders. Therefore, the Long An Provincial Executive Party Committee issued Resolution 08-NQ/TU on the breakthrough program on developing agriculture with high-tech applications in association with restructuring agricultural sector.

"Currently, the area of fruit trees in the province is mainly dragon fruit with over 11,000 hectares and lemon trees with nearly 10,000 hectares. Hopefully, management agencies, businesses, cooperatives, farmers producing and trading fruit trees in the southern provinces will continue to receive a lot of information to discuss, exchange and propose measures to develop sustainable fruit trees and information to access the advanced technological application into production in the revolutionary period 4.0 after this conference to adapt to the market with strong changes ", Mr. Pham Van Canh emphasized.

In order to promote the sustainable development of fruit trees in the southern provinces, the total area of fruit trees will have aimed to reach 1 million hectares by 2020, of which the area of major fruit trees is 810,000 hectares. Total production reaches 9.5 million tons (up more than 11.7% compared to 2016). The average productivity is 11.5 tons per hectare (increasing over 15% compared to 2016). The export turnover of vegetables and fruits is over USD 4.5 billion, of which fruit products account for more than USD 3.6 billion (> 80%).

With the above goal, Deputy Minister of MARD - Le Quoc Doanh asked localities to implement Decision No. 899/QD-TTg on restructuring agricultural sector in the direction of improving added value and sustainable development. Simultaneously, the area of some major export fruit trees such as bananas, mangoes, pineapples, longan, etc. continues to be expanded to well serve domestic consumption demand, limit import and increase export. The localtities focus on improving productivity, quality and food safety, reducing costs; increasing the proportion of certified products (safe, GAP, organic, etc.), boosting the unseasonable production. The localities improve storage capacity, reduce post-harvest losses in both quantity and quality. They enhance processing of fruit products, increase production value and avoid technical barriers for fresh products, expand markets, increase volume and export value. They build up trademarks, geographical indications and monopoly protection certificates of trademarks in Vietnam for specialty fruits.

According to the report from Department of Crop Production - MARD, the area of fruit trees in the south is estimated at 596,331 hectares (accounting for 60% of the total area of fruit trees nationwide) in 2018. Total fruit production reached more than 6.6 million tons (about 67% of the national fruit production), an increase of over 61% compared to 2010 (2.5 million tons).

Currently, the South has 14 types of fruits with large area (over 10 thousand hectares per type). The Mekong River Delta is a major fruit growing region (accounting for about 58% of the total area of fruit trees in the South). However, the area of fruit trees is scattered, small and unconcerntrated; it is difficult to invest infrastructure, organize production association and control product quality. There are only a few fruits such as dragon fruit, bananas and citrus fruits that are forming relatively large-scale production areas.

In recent years, the export turnover of vegetables and fruits has continuously increased at a high rate, from USD 151.5 million in 2003 up to USD 1.07 billion USD in 2013, it reached USD 2.458 billion in 2016, increasing an average of 1.25 times per year.

In 2018, fruit and vegetable export value reached USD 3.8 billion, an increase of 47.3% compared to 2017; in which, estimated fruit products account for over 80%. In 2018, there are 13 major export markets worth over USD 25 million; China is the largest market (accounting for 73.1% market share), then the US, South Korea, Japan, the Netherlands, Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates./.
