Long An strengthens prevention and control of Chikungunya, dengue fever and Zika

In order to proactively prevent and control Chikungunya, dengue fever and Zika, on August 13, the People's Committee of Long An province issued an official letter No. 4881/UBND-VHXH requesting relevant departments, branches, People's Committees of districts, Kien Tuong town and Tan An city to strengthen the prevention and control of Chikungunya, dengue fever and Zika.

According to the report of the provincial Public Security, from July 19 to 22, 2020, in Banteay Meanchey province – Kingdom of Cambodia, about 100 people have been infected with Chikungunya virus. As of August 1, 2020, 1,020 people were infected in 12 provinces and cities of Kingdom of Cambodia including Banteay Meanchey, Siem Reap, Preah Vihear, Kampong Chain, Tbong Khmum, Ta Keo, Kampot, Preah Sihnouk, Oddar Meanchey, Pursat, Pailin and Stung Treng.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted to humans through infected Aedes mosquito. Common symptoms of the disease are fever, severe sorethroat, bone pain, muscle aches, headache, nausea, fatigue, and rash; The clinical manifestations of this disease is as that of dengue and Zika. The Chikungunya epidemic has quickly spread to 12 provinces and cities in Kingdom of Cambodia and is likely to continue to spread to other localities (including 3 provinces bordering Vietnam: Tbong Khmum, Ta Keo, Kampot).

Besides, the epidemic dengue fever in the province is also complicated. According to the Department of Health's statistics, from the beginning of the year to August 4, 2020, the number of cases of dengue fever recorded was 1,083, down 52.6 percent over the same period in 2019 (2,911 cases). However, recently the number of dengue fever has increased rapidly in 15 out of 15 districts, towns and cities. The cases are mainly concentrated in such districts as Duc Hoa, Ben Luc, Can Duoc, Can Giuoc and Tan An city (accounting for 71 percent of the total cases of the province), of which, in Duc Hoa district alone recorded 313 cases, accounting for 29 percent of the total number of cases in the province.

Facing the above situation, in order to proactively implement measures to effectively prevent and control Chikungunya, dengue fever and Zika, determine to control the epidemic, minimize the number of cases in the coming time, the Provincial People's Committee issued Document No. 4881/UBND-VHXH requested relevant departments, branches, People's Committees of districts, Kien Tuong town, Tan An city to strengthen prevention and control of Chikungunya, dengue fever and Zika.

Here, the People's Committee of the province requires localities to develop and implement effectively plans on prevention and control of Chikungunya, dengue fever, Zika, especially in high-risk areas, promptly detect the disease and handle it immediately, not to let epidemic outbreaks, spread or prolong.

For the Department of Health, the Provincial People's Committee required to closely monitor the situation of Chikungunya, dengue fever, Zika, promptly advise the Provincial People's Committee to direct the disease prevention and control effectively and in line with the developing situation in the province and the possibility of epidemic infestation from abroad into Vietnam, especially on the provincial border lines. At the same time, it coordinates with related units to strengthen direct communication in the community, guide people to implement hygiene measures for disease prevention and personal hygiene.

In addition, the Provincial People's Committee requires departments, agencies and unions depending on their functions to perform well the prevention and control of Chikungunya, dengue fever and Zika./.
