On December 10, 1861, after arranging an ambush force on the shore, immediately 5 boats carrying Nguyen Trung Truc and 59 heroic soldiers pretended to be rice trading boats close to the L'Espérance warship. The on-duty officer thought that the group of boats stopped to ask for permission to travel, so he leaned out the warship windows when he was suddenly stabbed in the chest by a weapon of the heroic soldiers. At the same time, the heroic soldiers held the swords, spears and torches, jumped up from these small boats, shouted and fought against the French soldiers.

On both riversides, the heroic soldiers also quickly came to fight. Nguyen Trung Truc allowed using a prepared fire extinguisher to set fire to the warship. Due to the unexpected attack, the French army suffered great damage, the L'Espérance was sunk in the Nhut Tao river bed. The victory of Vam Nhut Tao left a brilliant mark in the history of our nation against foreign invaders.
