Up to now, the district has 2 urban areas (1 grade IV - Can Giuoc town recognized in 2015 and 1 grade V - Long Duc Dong urban area recognized in 2021). With the advantage of geographical and economic location, in 2017, the district was planned to become the southern satellite urban area (grade III urban area) of Ho Chi Minh City.
According to the orientation of the province, by 2025, the district will form the Can Giuoc urban area on the whole district (at the grade III); By 2030, Can Giuoc will become the city under the province.

Chairman of Can Giuoc People's Committee - Nguyen Anh Duc informed that in 2021, the district proactively proposed to the Provincial People's Committee to submit to the Prime Minister to build the general planning of Can Giuoc urban area. Through the process of implementation, up to now, the district has been approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 1405, dated 11/11/2022. Currently, the district is coordinating with provincial departments and branches to accelerate the planning, striving to approve and submit to the Prime Minister for approval in the fourth quarter of 2023.
Under the direction of Provincial People's Committee, the district set the orientation to recognize Can Giuoc as a city under the province. With a structure of 10 wards and 5 communes, it is guaranteed to meet the criteria according to regulations on urban standards. In addition, the district deploys other necessary contents to serve the process of urban construction and recognition such as urban architecture management; urban development program formulation; urban plans of grade III formulation; recognition of meeting standards of wards (in 2025); city recognition project (from 2025 to before 2030).

However, the urban development work in the district in recent years has also encountered difficulties: Investment resources are limited; pressure on migration, population expansion from Ho Chi Minh City, causing difficulties in land management, construction, environment, security and order; a number of concentrated residential areas have not yet ensured technical infrastructure conditions.
Secretary of Can Giuoc Party Committee - Truong Thanh Liem said that in order to ensure convenient, fast and sustainable urban construction and development, maximize advantages, potentials and strengths, and overcome challenges shortcomings, limitations, the district proposed many solutions: improve the quality of planning and implementation, especially land use planning, general planning for construction of communes, urban zoning planning to ensure the orientation of urban construction and development the district into city in the near future.
Simultaneously, the district well implemented the Resolution of the District Party Committee on strengthening the leadership in land management, building and improving the quality of life in existing residential areas according to the construction direction of Can Giuoc city in the period of 2023-2030.
With the view of creating a breakthrough with many new traffic works, synchronous connection at all localities in the district and the area adjacent to Ho Chi Minh City, the district has proactively proposed to the Provincial People's Committee to let it balance its own budget in the bridge project over Can Giuoc river - the key project of the Resolution of District Party Congress for the term 2020-2025; survey, design and invest in upgrading provincial roads connecting with Ho Chi Minh City such as Provincial Roads 826, 826C, 835B.
In addition, the district is investing in a number of key and highlight projects: Truong Long dyke, Can Giuoc river square, Can Giuoc river night street, etc as well as coordinating with provincial departments and branches to speed up the procedures to implement the project of National Highway 50B, Tan Tap - Long Hau road (remaining part), etc.

In addition, the district focuses on mobilizing non-budget investment resources to create a strong driving force for socio-economic development; continue to promote good coordination in transport infrastructure between the bordering areas according to the socio-economic development cooperation program between the province and Ho Chi Minh City in general as well as between Can Giuoc district and Binh Chanh, Nha Be, Can Gio districts (HCMC) in particular, including the bridge connecting My Loc commune, Can Giuoc district with Qui Duc commune, Binh Chanh district; Rach Doi bridge connects Long Hau commune, Can Giuoc district with Nhon Duc commune, Nha Be district; The route from Can Giuoc to Can Gio ferry port connects Binh Khanh commune, Can Gio district with Tan Tap commune, Can Giuoc district.
At the same time, the district has strengthened propaganda and called for the consensus and unity of the whole political system and people in urban construction and development./.
