Dong Thap Muoi sub-region “waking up” to tourism potentials

Dong Thap Muoi (Plain of Reeds) sub-region provinces of Dong Thap, Long An and Tien Giang need to build and strengthen linkages among themselves for promoting tourism potentials, said experts.

Tien Giang is well-known for special fruits, such as Vinh Kim star-apple, Cai Be guava and others. The province has a great tourism potentials with tourist destinations and historical sites, including Lan islet, Phung islet, Cai Be floating market, Vinh Trang pagoda, Linh Thuu Pagoda, Dong Tam Snake Farm and many ancient traditional houses.

Meanwhile the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap has offered many land and river tours to destinations, attracting a large number of travelers, such as Tram Chim National Park, Xeo Quyt relic, Huynh Thuy Le's ancient house, Sa Dec flower village and more.

Tram Chim National Park was recognized as World Ramsar Site in 2012. It is spread over an area of 7,313 hectares and has abundant flora and fauna species with over 130 species of vascular plants. Tram Chim is home to over 100 species of vertebrate animals, 40 species of fish, and nearly 200 types of water-birds, of which 15 are on the endangered list. Many bird species in the park have been listed as endangered and rare like the Big Cormorants, Painted Storks, Lesser Adjutants and the Sarus Cranes.

Huynh Thuy Le's ancient house which was built in 1895 is home of the main character in French writer Marguerite Duras’s novel “The Lover” in Sa Dec town. It has been listed as one of Vietnam’s most impressive destinations by the Vietnam Federation of UNESCO Associations.

Long An province has focused on developing and promoting ecotourism with unique tourism products, such as Tan Lap floating village, Dong Thap Muoi Pharmaceutical Development and Conservation Research Center, Lang Sen Wetland Reserve, and historical sites and amusement parks.

The provinces have hold many conferences to seek solutions for developing the tourism potentials of the Dong Thap Muoi sub-region

According to insiders, the three provinces must cooperate to promote their strong points as well as strengthen the tourism potentials of the Dong Thap Muoi sub-region.

Provinces should collaborate to improve and upgrade infrastructure to closer destinations and to reduce travel time; train employees, offer many choices of tours, and create advantages for travel enterprises./.
