Long An: 18 sluice gates urgently installed to prevent saline intrusion

On February 5, the Long An Department of Transport is urgently installing 18 sluice gates to prevent saline intrusion on National Highway (NH) 62 and Provincial Road (PR) 836 in anticipation of high salinity increase in the next few days.

Accordingly, from February 5-6, Traffic Construction Joint Stock Company 674 (under the Long An Department of Transport) will completely install 18 salinity-preventing sluices managed by the Provincial Department of Transport. In which, there are 16 sluice gates on NH 62 and 2 sluice gates on PR 836. The sluice gates installed are all steel, especially, Rach Go and Rach Chua sluices that are wooden sluice gates, they are badly damaged, and are not ensured the salinity prevention, and will also be replaced by new steel gates.

It is forecasted that saline water will rise to the highest level on the occasion of Traditional New Year – Spring of Buffalo, from February 8 to 16. Accordingly, the salinity degree of 4 grams per liter can penetrate deep into the main stream on Vam Co river from 75 to 90 kilometers. Therefore, the unit is urgently installing the main sluice gates before February 7, in order to avoid saline intrusion into the interior fields, affecting freshwater sources for production and people’s daily use in Southern of NH 62 in the dry season 2020 - 2021./.
