Long An International Port officially merges 7 wharfs and opens the container cargo service

On June 24, Board of Directors of Long An International Port officially merged 7 wharfs and opened the container cargo service. This is an important milestone, confirming the strategic vision towards the goal of becoming an internationally recognized seaport in Asia. This is an important highlight in the series of activities to celebrate the 54th anniversary of Dong Tam's founding day (June 25, 1969 - June 25, 2023).

International Port project cluster with a planning of 1,935 hectares in Can Giuoc district, Long An province, includes 396 hectares of industrial park; 39 hectares of service-industrial area, 1,145 hectares of urban area and most especially an 147 hectares seaport. All of them are a harmonious combination of a seaport service complex, with ancillary works, utilities constantly invested and expanded, bringing outstanding value to the whole area. After 8 years of construction from 2015, on June 24, 2023, the investor unit (Dongtam Group) announced the merging of 7 wharfs of Long An International Port (total length from Pier 1 to Pier 7 is 1,670m) and opened a container cargo service.

Dongtam Group has invested more than 500 million USD in the port area such as investment in technical infrastructure; warehouses and yards up to 1 million square meters; powerful means of transport, a system of modern mining equipment; facilities; auxiliary works,etc contributing to realizing the vision of building Long An International Port to become "A destination for all needs".

Long An International Port is actively developing its container handling capacity. During this period, the Port invested in 6 STS cranes and 18 RTG cranes manufactured and assembled 100% in Japan, from the world's leading manufacturer Mitsui E&S Machinery - a unit with hundreds of years of experience in the field of heavy industry. In addition, Long An International Port will continue to expand investment, constantly upgrade mining equipment, towards the target of 1,000,000 TEU exploitation capacity.

Mr. Vo Quoc Thang - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dongtam Group, Chairman of the Business Association of Long An province, affirmed: "The enthusiasm and resources that Dongtam Group has invested in the project is a testament to the spirit of determination, promoting economic development in the Mekong Delta. And this is especially significant for the socio-economic development of low-income areas across the country. The project cluster brings benefits to the Mekong Delta from attracting investment, optimizing logistics costs, reducing product costs, increasing the competitiveness of goods in the region, contributing to the creation of new urban areas, improving people's lives".

The port is built with the goal of providing the most complete service of modern seaport and logistics, transportation, storage, warehousing and added-value services, constantly expanding investment, meeting the requirements of safe and effective operation for a variety of goods, meeting the needs of customers to the fullest.

Member of the Standing Committee of Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of Provincial People's Committee - Nguyen Minh Lam delivered a speech at the event: “In the strategy of developing and completing the transport infrastructure connecting the province with the surrounding area, in order to optimize logistics costs for businesses investing in Long An province in particular, and in the Mekong Delta in general, the development orientation of Long An International Port to become a general seaport with diversified exploitation services is completely suitable. The birth of Long An International Port has contributed to solving logistics problems and is one of the driving forces for economic development in the Mekong Delta. This is also reflected in the Prime Minister's Decision No. 686 dated June 13, 2023 approving the Planning of Long An province for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050.

Long An province, with a clear development plan and orientation, is always interested in promoting investment in transport infrastructure connecting key industrial zones/clusters with the Port, making Long An International Port develop worthy of the dynamic center of the province and Mekong Delta. This is not only the responsibility of the investor, but also the responsibility of all levels and sectors of Long An province, jointly shouldering for a common goal of building potentials and advantages that are rarely found elsewhere, achieving practical results, promoting breakthrough development in the socio-economic development of Long An province”.

During the period of both construction and exploitation, the port receives ships with a tonnage of up to 70,000 DWT. Cargo through the Port will reach 2 million and 2.2 million tons in 2021, 2022, respectively. On this occasion, the Port officially opened the container handling service besides traditional products such as agriculture, aquatic products, fertilizers, iron, steel, machinery and equipment, and super-long and super-heavy items.

“I want to share the joy of officials and employees of Long An International Port when officially welcoming the first container ship to the port and the operation performance is quite impressive. We are ready in terms of operational capacity and equipment to safely and efficiently exploit container cargo. We orient the exploitation capacity of Long An International Port to 1,000,000 TEU by 2030, handling 10 million tons of general cargo through the Port.” Mr. Peter Hendrik Slootweg - General Director of Long An International Port Management and Exploitation Joint Stock Company said.

The flagpole of Long An International Port is the tallest flagpole in Indochina with a 63m high body (from foot to top) representing 63 provinces/cities of Vietnam, 54m2 flag representing 54 ethnic groups./.
