Regional conference on economic development associated with environmental protection and introduction of PGI in the Mekong Delta region is to discuss and clarify advantages as well as limitations, especially relevant criteria related to the PGI index, as a basis for a better performance in 2023; promote the region's socio-economic development comprehensively and sustainably.

Attending the conference were Standing Committee member, VCCI Deputy General Secretary, Project Manager of Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI) - Dau Anh Tuan; Director of VCCI Branch in Can Tho - Nguyen Phuong Lam; leaders of the People's Committees of some provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region; Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, etc.

At the conference, Vice Chairman of Long An Provincial People's Committee - Huynh Van Son delivered a speech. Accordingly, Long An highly appreciates the continuous and persistent cooperation efforts between VCCI and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in order to enhance the quality of economic management, create a favorable business environment and promote business development in Vietnam in general and localities, including Long An province in particular.

After 18 years of VCCI's annual report publication, PCI has become an effective means of conveying business messages and expectations to all levels of government; and vice versa, PCI is also a symbol of the market, the spirit of cooperation with businesses.

Especially this year, for the first time, VCCI officially launched a PGI investigation; according to the results announced PGI 2022, Long An reached 15.04 points; ranked 28th out of 63 provinces and cities nationwide and ranked 3rd in the Mekong Delta region.

Thus, along with efforts to improve the business investment environment through the assessment of enterprises, all levels and branches of Long An province have also made efforts in direction and administration; implemented solutions and policies to encourage and support enterprises to apply green technologies, contributing to promoting the building of an environmentally friendly business ecosystem; came up with solutions to minimize the negative impacts of climate change and environmental pollution on business activities and sustainability.

Along with implementing regulations from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Long An has issued the Action Plan on green growth for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 in Long An province with the goal of ensuring rapid and sustainable economic development, economical and efficient use of energy and natural resources, enrichment of natural capital.

In the field of investment promotion, attraction and licensing, the province is always interested in economic development associated with environmental protection; implement the motto of not trading environment for economy, prioritize attracting investors who are conscious of environmental protection and "green" projects, high-tech projects, clean industry development projects, use renewable energy, reduce environmental pollution. At the same time, Long An has also been reviewing waste treatment projects in the provincel and give priority to receiving projects with modern waste treatment technology associated with electricity generation.

The province is also determined not to put into operation projects and production facilities that do not meet environmental requirements. Before being put into operation, most investment projects in the province must carry out environmental administrative procedures and commit to environmental protection in accordance with the law.

The annual environmental inspection is strengthened, therby timely detecting and handling violations of the environmental law, preventing repeated violations, etc.

Chairman of VCCI Can Tho - Nguyen Phuong Lam commented that Long An is the province with the leading economic scale in the Mekong Delta, in which, in terms of investment attraction, it is nearly equal to the 12 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta combined. Orienting industrial development, promoting investment attraction poses many challenges in terms of environmental protection for the province. However, VCCI highly appreciates the direction and management of Long An province's leaders when balancing quite well between economic development and investment attraction, while still paying attention to green environment improvement and development of green economy, thereby improving the competitiveness of the province in the coming time and becoming a bright spot of the southern provinces and cities both in terms of PCI and PGI in the future.

Mr. Huynh Van Son shared, in the coming time, Long An will continue to promote the results achieved from the implemented solutions, the province will promote the synchronous implementation of the following solutions:

Reviewing and promulgating legal documents on environmental protection under the authority of the Provincial People's Committee to stipulate and guide in detail the contents assigned in the Law on Environmental Protection in 2020 and promptly deploy to the community for businesses to easily access and implement.

Strengthening propaganda, raising awareness of the community and businesses to well perform environmental protection, rational exploitation and use of natural resources; calling for community participation.

Strengthening the inspection and supervision of implementation of the law on environmental protection for production, business and service establishments in the province. Better promoting the role of environmental monitoring in service of environmental forecasting, warning and control.

Promoting policies to attract socialization of waste and solid waste treatment in rural areas; wastewater treatment in urban areas. Guiding and supervising enterprises and projects that must invest in wastewater treatment systems in industrial parks and economic zones.

Thereby, Long An always wishes to improve environmental issues, improve people's life and landscape quality; build an environmentally friendly lifestyle, improve the ability to adapt to climate change; encourage innovation and develop sustainable production and business activities, promote high-quality green investment, ensure green and sustainable development for the locality, the region and the whole country./.
