Measures should be adopted to prevent strike: Deputy Chairman

In January 17 meeting to review strike control in 2017 and direction and handling strike in 2018, Nguyen Van Duoc, Deputy Chairman of People’s Committee in the Mekong delta province of Long An, ordered relevant agencies and local administrations must adopt measures to deter workers from taking part in strike.

From November 15, 2016 to November 15, 2017, 45 strikes and work cancellation had occurred in 39 companies, most in foreign-invested enterprises, six cases down compared in 2016. Duc Hoa, Ben Luc and Thu Thua districts have seen most strikes.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Hoa Thanh Nien, direct cause of strikes is some enterprises did not follow well the regulation in protecting laborers’ right and benefit. In addition, workers’ poor understanding and awareness of labor policies led also to improper requirement, Mr. Hoa Thanh Nien added.

People’s Committee said that most small-scale strikes and work cancellation in 2016 took place in short time without violent acts or social disorder. Cooperation between relevant agencies, local authorities and unions had not performed well, yet though they are good at solving strikes.

Mr. Duoc stressed as Tet holiday (the Lunar New Year) is approaching, strike relating to policies especially bonus easily occurs; accordingly, he proposed relevant agencies and local governments to early discover signs of strike to prevent and solve timely.

In the meeting, the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs also put forward a plan to understand wage and bonus of Tet holiday as well as basic salary in enterprises in the province./.
