Livestock farmers regularly clean their barns to prevent livestock diseases
Many difficulties remain
In recent times, the livestock industry has continued to affirm its pivotal role in the agricultural structure of Tay Ninh province, gradually transforming towards modernity and sustainability. Many circular livestock models, applying high technology, ensuring biosafety and being environmentally friendly have been implemented, contributing to increasing added value and production efficiency.
In the past nearly 2 years, the livestock industry has faced many challenges. One of the leading causes is the high price of input materials. Specifically, the cost of animal feed, breeding animals, and veterinary drugs has continuously increased, while the selling price of products is unstable. The price of live pigs sometimes fluctuates around 46,000-49,000 VND/kg, much lower than the production cost. Livestock farmers are losing money, many households have to reduce their herds, even abandon their barns waiting for more positive signals from the market.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh (Nhon Ninh commune) shared: “Last year, the price of live pigs was too low, each pig sold at a loss of several hundred thousand dong. Therefore, I did not dare to re-herd. Since the beginning of 2025, the price of pigs has increased again, currently at more than 7.2 million VND/quintal. The increase in the price means the price of piglets has also increased, so I am still hesitant and have not re-herded.”

Disease-free and environmentally friendly livestock farming is the goal of the province's livestock industry
Not only prices, but livestock diseases are also the cause of farmers' hardship. Although the authorities have controlled diseases such as avian influenza, foot-and-mouth disease, African swine fever, etc. quite well, the risk of recurrence still exists. Many small and individual livestock farmers do not have the conditions to invest in closed barns and have not fully applied biosafety measures, so they pose great risks.
The province aims to develop the livestock industry by 2030 in the direction of reducing the number of small and scattered households, increasing the proportion of high-tech farms; increasing livestock products that meet food safety standards; improving the capacity to control the livestock environment and building product brands associated with production areas". Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, a broiler chicken farmer in Tan Lan commune, said: "Before, I only raised broiler chickens, each batch had about 2,000 chickens, with a profit of 20-30 million VND/batch. But since the beginning of 2025, feed prices have increased sharply while chicken prices have been unstable, sometimes falling below 40,000 VND/kg. Livestock farming is not profitable, so I plan to reduce the herd.” |
Meanwhile, some farms that have invested systematically and applied high technology have difficulty accessing the market. Livestock products are mostly unbranded and have not built a closed chain from production to consumption, so they are easily forced to lower prices by traders. This makes investing in livestock farming risky and unsustainable.
Towards safe, environmentally friendly livestock farming
Faced with the difficulties of the livestock industry, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has been closely coordinating with relevant departments and sectors to develop synchronous orientations and solutions to restore and develop livestock in a sustainable direction.
First of all, the department focuses on building and expanding disease-free livestock farming areas. This not only ensures safety for domestic production but also creates favorable conditions for the gradual export of livestock products.
At the same time, the department promotes the linkage between enterprises - cooperatives - livestock farmers to support techniques and stable output, reducing market risks.
A notable direction is to develop circular livestock farming, using by-products as fertilizers, bioenergy, and minimizing environmental pollution. Many large farms have invested in biogas systems, organic fertilizer compost pits, and reused treated wastewater, both saving costs and limiting waste to the environment. This is a development direction in line with the trend of green agriculture and clean agriculture that the province is aiming for.
In the long term, the department will advise the Provincial People's Committee to re-plan the livestock system by region, ensuring that it is suitable for ecological conditions and population density. New investment projects must meet the requirements of environmental treatment technology, disease safety and be consistent with the orientation of high-tech agricultural development.
In addition, the department will soon supplement policies to support preferential loans and green credit for livestock households to invest in upgrading barns, waste treatment systems, converting to high-yield livestock breeds, and better adapting to climate change and diseases.
Tay Ninh province aims to develop the livestock industry by 2030 in the direction of reducing the number of small and scattered households, increasing the proportion of high-tech farms; increasing livestock products that meet food safety standards; improving the capacity to control the livestock environment and building product brands associated with production areas.
In the current challenging transformation period, difficulties are inevitable but not insurmountable if there is consensus among people, businesses and the government. With a sustainable development orientation, focusing on environmental factors and biosafety, Tay Ninh province has every opportunity to build a modern livestock industry, create stable livelihoods for people and contribute positively to the province's agricultural growth in the coming time./.
