A successful year for agriculture sector

By the end of 2024, Long An province's agricultural sector has achieved impressive and quite comprehensive results. In particular, the production value of many agricultural products increased, contributing to improving people's income and affirming the important role in the province's economic structure.

Many outstanding results

In 2024, the growth rate of Primary sector is estimated to increase by 3.6%; of which, agriculture increases by 3.28%; forestry decreases by 1.84%; fishery increases by 8.9%.

According to the assessment of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, in 2024, agricultural production maintains positive growth momentum, most agricultural product prices were stable at a fairly high level, bringing many positive signals to the people.

In 2024, dragon fruit consumption situation was quite favorable

Some of the province's main crops such as dragon fruit, durian, lime, grapefruit, etc grew and developed well, with output increasing compared to the same period. Diseases on crops and livestock were closely monitored and controlled; some small, sporadic outbreaks appeared and were promptly controlled, preventing widespread spread. Aquaculture exploitation and cultivation are implemented according to the seasonal framework, the consumption of aquatic products is favorable, and aquaculture output has increased compared to the same period.

The province's rice output in 2024 is estimated at over 3.18 million tons

According to the Department of Cultivation, Plant Protection and Agricultural Product Quality Management of the province, the total rice area of the province in 2024 is estimated at 538,900 hectares, reaching 108.8% of the plan, increased 4.38% over the same period, the average yield is 5.91 tons/hectare, the output is estimated at over 3.18 million tons, reaching 111.8% of the plan, increased 3.43% over the same period.

The planting area of ​​the province's key agricultural products has also increased compared to the same period, the consumption situation is relatively favorable, the selling prices of most agricultural products have increased compared to the same period, especially rice, lime, dragon fruit and jackfruit.

Regarding livestock farming, livestock and poultry herds remain stable with a total pig herd estimated at 88,000; poultry of all kinds estimated at 10.25 million; cattle herd estimated at 101,800; buffalo herd estimated at 4,900. Estimated total meat output is 89,278 tons; egg output is 704,613 eggs; etc.

Despite facing many difficulties in terms of diseases, increasing animal feed prices, decreasing meat prices, etc the production value of livestock also contributes significantly to the overall economic development of the province.

In 2024, the aquaculture situation is also relatively favorable, with few diseases, and high productivity of commercial aquatic products.

The total estimated area for commercial aquaculture in the province is 8,852 hectares; cage farming is 17,500 m3. Up to now, 7,925 hectares have been harvested with an output of 135,000 tons, reaching 150% of the plan and 112.5% ​​compared to the same period.

Regarding new rural construction, up to now, the whole province has 134 communes meeting new rural standards, accounting for 83.22%; 41 communes meeting advanced new rural standards, accounting for 30.59% of the total number of communes meeting new rural standards; 2 communes meeting model new rural standards; 4 district units have met/completed new rural construction tasks.

Since the beginning of 2024, the whole province has recognized 83 OCOP products; up to now, the whole province has 231 products meeting OCOP standards, of which, there are 47 4-star products, 184 3-star products.

In general, Long An's agricultural production structure is gradually being adjusted towards modernity, multi-value, promoting the advantages of each locality, linking with market demand, adapting to climate change and international integration. The province is continuing to innovate, improve the efficiency of production organization forms and encourage businesses to invest in agricultural production.

Striving to achieve a growth rate of 2%

In 2024, the provincial Department of Agriculture set out 6 targets: Growth rate of primary sector (agriculture, forestry, fishery) reaches 2.0%; rice output reaches 2,950,000 tons.

Of which, high-quality rice output accounts for 75% of total output; 7 more communes meet new rural standards; 5 communes meet advanced new rural standards and 2 communes meet model new rural standards; 3 more districts meets new rural standards; the rate of rural households using clean water reaches 77%; 500 hectares of post-exploitation production forest and 1,335,000 or more scattered trees of various types were planted.

Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development - Nguyen Thanh Truyen affirmed that in the context of many socio-economic difficulties and challenges, this is an encouraging result of the agricultural sector.

The achieved results are quite comprehensive and continue to be a pillar of the provincial economy, contributing significantly to the overall growth and socio-economic development of the province.

In the coming time, the agricultural sector will continue to promote restructuring towards developing green, modern agriculture, circular economy; unlock resources for developing production, processing and consumption of agricultural products; etc.

In particular, the agricultural sector needs to focus on accelerating digital transformation and effectively deploying and implementing a number of programs and projects such as the Program for Developing High-tech Agriculture in association with restructuring the agricultural sector; Investment Program for Construction and Development of New Rural Areas; Project Sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030; etc - Mr. Nguyen Thanh Truyen informed./.
