Innovating to elevate agricultural sector

In recent times, the Long An Province Department of Agriculture has actively supported farmers to promote mechanization and apply high technology in production, especially the High-tech Agricultural Development Program associated with restructuring the agricultural sector, which has achieved many positive results. Farmers have gradually changed from traditional production to agricultural economics towards clean production, meeting the needs of consumers and exports.

Positive changes

In recent times, information and propaganda work has been closely implemented from the province to the district level in many forms, contributing to positive changes in the awareness of cadres, civil servants, workers and people participating in the implementation of the Agricultural Development Program in association with restructuring the agricultural sector.

Departments, branches and localities have paid attention to developing and promulgating plans and programs to ensure adherence to the set goals, tasks, solutions and requirements, thereby contributing to achieving positive results in many aspects.

Notably, there has been a change in people's awareness, gradually changing traditional farming practices.

Along with that, farmers have been aware of using organic fertilizers, microbial organic fertilizers, biological pesticides, using greenhouses and net houses; diversifying cultivated crops (developing melon acreage, increasing flower acreage, especially those with high economic value); The products are of better quality and accepted by the market, especially in market segments with high added value.

In addition, rural infrastructure has been invested in upgrading and expanding, many rural roads have been invested in construction, intra-field canals have been dredged, electricity works and pumping stations have been built, creating favorable conditions for agricultural production using high technology.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Can Giuoc district, up to now, the whole district has nearly 1,340 hectares of high-tech vegetables and 537.2 hectares of high-tech shrimp. Farmers are aware of using organic fertilizers, organic microorganisms, biological pesticides, using greenhouses and net houses. The products are of good quality and meet market requirements.

Along with that, the district promotes the transfer of science and technology, supports preferential loans, builds agricultural production models with high quality, safety and efficiency applying VietGAP processes, etc

Transport and irrigation works are invested in to serve irrigation, production, create conditions for farmers to change crop structure.

According to the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Director of Phuoc Hiep Safe Vegetable Cooperative (Phuoc Hau commune, Can Giuoc district) - Tran Thanh Minh, the Cooperative organizes for members to produce vegetables according to the model of using organic microbial fertilizers; using biological pesticides, protecting the environment, maintaining ecological balance; applying automatic and economical irrigation systems; producing in greenhouses to limit the impact of weather and pests, meeting safe vegetable standards and moving towards VietGAP standards, chain production, etc. The total production area of cooperative members is about 45 hectares, of which 4.9 hectares are VietGAP certified and 5 products were regconized as 3-star OCOP products.

"The Department of Agriculture from the province to the district level regularly creates conditions and transfers science and technology in production to cooperative members. In addition, the cooperative also holds regular meetings every 2 months so that members have a place to exchange and share experiences to produce more effectively" - Mr. Tran Thanh Minh said.

High-tech beef cattle farming models help improve the quality and value of cattle herds

In recent times, the construction of high-quality beef cattle farming models in the province has brought about positive results. In the period of 2021-2025, the province provides 62 breeding cows in 5 pilot models, and supports the conversion of 285 breeding cows for 59 households to improve the breeding cow herd in the districts of Duc Hoa, Duc Hue, Tan Tru and Thu Thua. In 2024 alone, the province supported 52 breeding cows for 15 households participating in breed conversion.

Most of these models are economically effective and meet the program's requirements of proactively sourcing breeding cows, increasing the value of the herd by more than 30% in value as well as weight, the interval between 2 litters of about 2-3 years/cow has been reduced to about 2 years/cow, and some households have even reduced it to about 14 months/cow. Thereby shortening the time to increase the herd, increasing income for breeders.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, up to now, the whole province has 59,672 hectares of rice growing area, reaching 99.5% of the plan for the period 2016-2025; 2,083 hectares of vegetables growing area, reaching 104.1% of the plan for 2021-2025; 5,849 hectares of dragon fruit growing area, reaching 97.5% of the plan for 2021-2025; 4,114 hectares of lime growing area, reaching 137.1% of the plan for 2021-2025. The department supported 62 breeding cows at 5 pilot models, supported the conversion of 285 breeding cows for 59 households to improve the breeding cow herd in the districts of Duc Hoa, Duc Hue, Tan Tru and Thu Thua.

Inevitable trend

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development - Dinh Thi Phuong Khanh said that after nearly 10 years of implementation, it can be said that the program has completed earlier than expected.

To achieve this result, from the beginning, the province clearly identified agricultural production areas to focus resources on investing in infrastructure construction and calling for businesses to accompany and invest in warehouses and agricultural processing factories.

At the same time, the Program for Developing High-Tech Agriculture in association with restructuring the agricultural sector is also one of the three breakthrough programs of the Provincial Party Congress and the Provincial People's Council, so the implementation process did not encounter many difficulties, the entire agricultural sector from the province to the district level coordinated to implement synchronously, scientifically and effectively.

Applying advanced technology to production is an inevitable trend of modern agriculture. During the implementation of the program, farmers' awareness has become increasingly clear. Thereby affirming the effectiveness of the program in promoting agricultural production towards quality and safety to better meet market demand.

In the coming time, the provincial Department of Agriculture will continue to promote propaganda work, gradually changing farmers' awareness and thinking from agricultural production to agricultural economics; implement the transfer of science and technology to farmers to improve production efficiency, improve the quality and competitiveness of agricultural products.

In addition, the sector also continues to consolidate and develop cooperatives and cooperative groups linking agricultural product consumption, focusing on digital transformation and infrastructure investment to serve agricultural production areas using advanced technology - Ms. Dinh Thi Phuong Khanh added.

The province has been making efforts to use advanced technology in agricultural production with the aim of improving productivity, quality and competitiveness of local agricultural products.

Through support policies, investment and development orientation, Long An has gradually become one of the bright spots in advanced technology in agriculture, contributing greatly to the socio-economic development of the province./.

The high technology beef cattle farming models not only change the traditional farming habits of farmers but also help improve the quality and value of the cattle herd, creating generations of crossbred cows with beautiful appearance and good development ability, so some crossbred calves are kept by people to replace low quality cows.

Deputy Head of the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Fisheries - Huynh Thi Kim Phuong

Through training sessions and technology transfer from the district and provincial Department of Agriculture, I have been equipped with more knowledge about agricultural production, especially the application of mechanization and high technology in production, helping me reduce input costs and improve the quality of output products".
