Restructuring agricultural sector associated with new rural construction

To achieve the goal of comprehensive, modern and sustainable agricultural and rural development, Long An has promoted restructuring of the agricultural sector in association with new rural construction, gradually improving economic value and increasing income for farmers.

The momentum to improve criteria

Identifying agricultural restructuring as one of the momenta to improve new rural criteria, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development advised the province to develop sectors and products, integrate capital sources from national target and socio-economic development programs.

Accordingly, the province promotes restructuring of the agricultural sector towards building high-tech agriculture, large-scale commodity production, developing smart and circulation agriculture, international integration, adapting to climate change, increasing added value and sustainable development, associated with new rural construction.

The entire Can Giuoc district currently has more than 1,335 hectares of high-tech vegetables

Can Giuoc is proposing to be recognized as a district meeting new rural standards in 2023. This result is partly due to the district effectively implementing Resolution No. 11, dated November 2, 2020 of the District Party Committee on applying high-tech agriculture in vegetable growing and brackish water shrimp farming associated with restructuring the agricultural sector in the period 2020-2025.

Currently, in the district, there are many high-tech application models that are more effective than traditional farming. These models help reduce production costs, reduce labor, stabilize and improve product quality, limit some risks caused by weather, create safe products meeting market requirements.

According to Director of Phuoc Hiep Safe Vegetable Cooperative (Phuoc Hau commune, Can Giuoc district) - Tran Thanh Minh, with the advantage of the land being located near the estuary, accumulating a lot of ancient alluvium, since the policy of converting the structure of crops and livestock of the local government, he quickly gathered and attracted members to establish the cooperative.

Since its establishment, the cooperative has developed in a safe direction, strictly complying with environmental hygiene, ensuring the creation of high-quality products to serve the market.

“The cooperative has shifted from small-scale, backward production to concentrated production, built specialized vegetable growing areas, and applied modern science and technology to improve productivity and product quality. Instead of abusing pesticides and fertilizers as before, cooperative members now have a firm grasp of the principles of safe pest control, know how to use natural enemies, biological pesticides, etc to control pests and diseases, both increasing economic value and protecting the ecological environment, ensuring food safety and hygiene” - Mr. Tran Thanh Minh shared.

According to People's Committee of Tan Thanh district, the goal the district is to focus on converting towards specialized cultivation, mechanization, gradually applying high technology associated with preliminary processing, preservation, processing, forming safe and environmentally friendly agricultural value chains.

The whole district has more than 80% of the population living mainly on agriculture. In recent times, the district has focused on building production models, transforming the structure of crops and livestock, and increasing the value per unit of cultivated area.

Farmers in Tan Thanh district have converted from inefficient rice fields to durian, bringing high profits

Specifically, the district encourages and supports the development of projects to convert the structure of inefficient rice fields and orchards to other crops with higher economic efficiency.

To date, the district has more than 2,513 hectares of fruit trees of all kinds such as jackfruit, durian, lemon, grapefruit, custard apple, coconut, etc. The main varieties of fruit trees grown are Thai jackfruit, Ri6 durian, Mongthong durian, seedless lime, purple-flowered lime, dwarf green coconut, Malay coconut, green-skinned grapefruit, etc.

In addition, collective economic models, linkages, cooperation in production and consumption of products in the district have also been effective and increasingly widespread. To date, the district has 17 agricultural cooperatives.

Director of Tan Thinh Production, Trade and Service Cooperative (Nhon Hoa Lap commune, Tan Thanh district) - Bui Van Song said that the cooperative was established in 2019 with the goal of producing and supplying rice seeds, commercial rice and clean rice to local people.

Currently, the cooperative is promoting the application of science and technology in production to improve the quality of rice. Thereby building the local rice brand and increasing farmers' income.

Continue to promote implementation

In general, the implementation of restructuring the agricultural sector associated with new rural development in the province still has many limitations that need to be overcome, such as the efficiency of agricultural production is not commensurate with the potential and strengths and is not closely linked to the product consumption market; the application of high technology in production and investment capital for restructuring and construction of technical infrastructure works serving agricultural production is still low; the competitiveness of agricultural products is low; etc.

The province continues to call for enterprises to invest in agriculture, especially the agricultural processing industry

To continue restructuring the agricultural sector associated with new rural development, the provincial agricultural sector continues to promote restructuring and implement the movement "The whole country joins hands to build new rural areas"; coordinate with localities to review and adjust the development plan in accordance with the potential, advantages and needs of the market.

Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development - Nguyen Thanh Truyen informed: In the coming time, the Department will strengthen the transfer and application of science and technology, natural farming processes, organic farming in production, building brands of key agricultural products of the province; continue to complete the planning of concentrated production and processing areas; focus on cooperation in production and business according to product value chains.

In addition, the Department continues to promote and invite enterprises to invest in agriculture, especially in the agricultural processing industry, gradually changing the scale of production organization, transfering and quickly applying science and technology, improving economic efficiency on the same unit of cultivated area.

Agricultural restructuring is both a task and a driving force to accelerate the process of building new rural areas in the province. Therefore, continuing to restructure agriculture in the coming time will make an important contribution to the province's completion of the new rural development target in 2024, which is to have 8 more communes meeting new rural standards; 12 communes meeting advanced new rural standards and 4 communes meeting model new rural standards; and 3 more districts meeting new rural standards./.
