Developing OCOP products associated with new rural construction

Implementing the orientation of sustainable rural economic development associated with new rural construction, in recent times, Vinh Hung district, Long An province has focused on implementing the One Commune One Product (OCOP) program on the basis of exploiting local potential and advantages, enhancing the value of key agricultural products.

Exploiting the advantages of the highland, many farmers have switched from growing rice to fruit trees, of which green-skinned grapefruit is considered one of the suitable plants, grows well and brings high profits to the people. From this advantage, Vinh Hung district's functional sector has oriented to develop green-skinned grapefruit into a local OCOP product. Up to now, the district has 2 3-star OCOP products, which are green-skinned grapefruits.

In early 2024, Mr. Vo Van Lam (Bau Sen hamlet, Khanh Hung commune) registered to develop an OCOP green-skinned grapefruit product. He focused on improving the process and applying technology, producing organic grapefruit, ensuring quality and safe products. With the support of the local government, his green-skinned grapefruit products were recognized as meeting the 3-star OCOP standard.

Mr. Vo Van Lam said: “My grapefruit garden has an area of ​​4 hectares and is more than 5 years old. I find it very necessary to build OCOP products, especially now that consumers have high demands on the origin and quality of products. This is also a way for me to affirm my brand and increase the competitiveness in the market”.

In addition to green-skinned grapefruit, dried snakehead fish, goby fish, and catfish products of the Tu Chung dried fish and fish sauce processing facility (Khanh Hung commune) were also recognized as meeting the 3-star OCOP standard. This is the result of the process of changing the mindset and small-scale, fragmented production practices of farmers, gradually shifting from raw, hand-processed products to quality products with unique characteristics and high recognition.

The owner of Tu Chung facility (Khanh Hung commune) - Vo Thi Mai said: “To achieve today's results, we received support from all levels and sectors, especially in completing the documents, submitting them to the District Appraisal Council for evaluation and classification of OCOP products. At the same time, the district's Department of Agriculture provided technical training on the process of producing dried fish according to safety standards, building brands, bringing products to e-commerce platforms, etc. In the coming time, we will continue to improve product quality and coordinate with local authorities to promote our OCOP products”.

The OCOP program contributes to implementing the criteria on production and increasing people's income of the National Target Program on New Rural Development. The focus of the program is to develop agricultural, non-agricultural and service products with local advantages according to the value chain implemented by private and collective economic sectors.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vinh Hung district, after a period of implementation, the OCOP Program in Vinh Hung district has attracted participants, promoted creativity, improved production and business capacity, and created quality products. Up to now, Vinh Hung district has 10 products of 7 entities regconized as 3-star OCOP. In the coming time, the People's Committees of communes and towns in the district will continue to support cooperatives and enterprises to build OCOP products associated with improving the quality of the National Target Program on New Rural Development.

The OCOP Program in Vinh Hung district has been creating a positive spillover effect, spreading typical local products to potential new markets. During the implementation process, the program has changed farmers' production practices, creating new momentum to affirm the brands and product values in the market.

Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vinh Hung district - Dinh Chau Phong informed: In the coming time, the district will continue to guide and support the entities to develop key products, promote trade, advertise and enhance recognized products, create conditions for OCOP entities to expand the consumption market; at the same time, organize conferences, seminars, exchange experiences in implementing the OCOP Program associated with building organic agricultural raw material areas, encourage entities to proactively build brands, trademarks, promote production, business, increase income and sustainable development./.
