Continue to concretize foreign policy for socio-economic development in new period

On January 10, Ministry of Foreign Affairs held an online conference summarizing the Foreign Affairs sector in 2022 and implementing orientations and tasks in 2023. Prime Minister - Pham Minh Chinh; Minister of Foreign Affairs - Bui Thanh Son and Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs chaired. In 2022, the international situation continues to experience great fluctuations, with rapid, complicated and unexpected developments. Under the close and correct leadership and direction of the Central Committee, the Politburo, the Secretariat, the Party and State leaders, the Foreign Affairs branch has implemented synchronously, creatively and effectively foreign affairs activities, achieved comprehensive and important results, making great contributions to the country's socio-economic development.

External activities at all levels, especially those of the leaders of the Party and State, create new momentum and deepen relations with many partners, especially neighboring countries and important partners. traditional friends and potential partners. In 2022, there were nearly 70 external activities of key leaders both in person and online.

During the year, Foreign Affairs branch continued to work with related branches to firmly consolidate the borderline of peace, friendship, cooperation and development, creating favorable conditions for socio-economic exchanges, at the same time, persistently promoting dialogue and negotiation, in which important steps have been made in delimitation and settlement of a number of border and territorial issues in accordance with international law.

On the multilateral level, Vietnam has promoted its role, making active and responsible contributions to important multilateral mechanisms and forums, especially the United Nations, ASEAN, APEC, and Mekong sub-regional cooperation. 

In 2022, Vietnam was internationally trusted to be elected to many important international organizations: Vice President of the 77th United Nations General Assembly, a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council term 2023-2025 and Intergovernmental Committee of 2003 Convention for the Protection of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO term 2022-2026, etc.

In addition, the Foreign Affairs branch strived to coordinate with ministries, departments, branches and localities to actively promote economic content in external activities of Party and State leaders; effectively take advantage of economic links and agreements to expand and deepen economic cooperation with many partners. The results of economic diplomacy have contributed to maintaining macroeconomic stability, promoting our country's economic growth, boosting exports, and attracting many external resources for economic restructuring and sustainable development of the county, etc.

In 2023, the Foreign Affairs sector will continue to closely coordinate and implement synchronously, creatively and effectively foreign affairs tasks. In which, the focus is on properly handling the relationship between independence, self-reliance and solidarity, international cooperation, national interests, international obligations and responsibilities; building solidarity and consensus in foreign affairs implementation under the unified and absolute leadership of the Party and centralized management of the State; strengthening research, forecast and strategic advice on foreign affairs; building and rectifying the Party comprehensively in terms of politics, ideology, morality, organization and staff in the diplomatic sector, etc.

Speaking at the conference, Prime Minister - Pham Minh Chinh praised outstanding results of foreign affairs activities in 2022. The Prime Minister proposed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, relevant ministries, branches and localities continue to concretize the common foreign policy as a basis to contribute to economic construction and development in the new period, firmly grasp the situation, properly assess the nature of issues, advise the Party and State on foreign guidelines and policies suitable to each partner and object in different contexts and periods.

Simultaneously, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must strengthen research, assessment, and held summaries to draw lessons and strategic visions to help the Party and State keep the initiative in the fast and complicated developments of the world situation; properly handle the relationship between independence, self-reliance and solidarity, international cooperation, between national and national interests and international obligations and responsibilities.

Vietnam's embassies abroad must promote the introduction of the country, culture and people of Vietnam, focusing on highlighting the socio-economic development achievements, the foreign policy a good friend, a reliable partner of other countries and an active and responsible member of the international community.

Vietnam must strengthen coordination among ministries, agencies, sectors and localities to well implement multilateral diplomacy, ensure the highest interests of the natio, respect international law, and be flexible and innovative at the same time, being creative in strategy, adapting to new situations.

Officials operating in the field of diplomacy need to regularly hone their political skills, professional qualifications, and understanding in order to meet the requirements of foreign affairs in the new period; strengthen the work of external communication so that international friends have more understanding of the culture, history and people of Vietnam, and effectively fight against the distorting claims of hostile forces, etc./.
