Farmer busy preparing for the year-end market
To have a good income at the year end, farmers always put their heart into taking care of fruits and vegetables. In particular, watermelon is always the item chosen by many families to display on the fruit tray or as a gift because it has the meaning of luck and prosperity.
Since the end of October (Lunar calendar), farmers in watermelon growing areas in Long An province have been busy taking care of their crops to supply the market.
Mr. Ho Van Duc (Loc Trung hamlet, My Loc commune, Can Giuoc district) hopes to have a watermelon crop with high yield and stable prices
Mr. Ho Van Duc (Loc Trung hamlet, My Loc commune, Can Giuoc district) has grown watermelons for over 20 years. With a cultivated area of 1.3 hectares, he only grows a crop of watermelon at the end of the year, and rotates to vegetables such as green mustard, sweet mustard, etc in the remaining months.
Mr. Duc said: “If the price is good, after deducting costs, I will earn about 70 million VND in profit for each crop. Thanks to that, my family has a prosperous Tet holiday”.
According to Mr. Duc, growing watermelon is not simple, requiring meticulousness and care. “Watermelon vines are weakest in the early stages, susceptible to downy mildew. I have to check each vine every day, and if I detect a disease, I have to treat it immediately to avoid spreading. When it is close to harvest, green worms are a big concern, since they destroy the fruit very quickly. The weather is also erratic, so I need to monitor closely to make timely adjustments. This year, I applied an automatic irrigation system, which is both cost-saving and labor-saving” - Mr. Duc shared.
In recent years, the price of watermelon on the market has often fluctuated from 13,000 to 17,000 VND/kg. According to Mr. Duc, the price not only reflects the efforts of farmers but also directly determines the profit after each crop.
This year, he hopes that the weather will be favorable, so that the watermelon can grow well, have high yields, consistent quality and the market price will remain stable so that not only his family but all watermelon farmers will have a prosperous and fulfilling Lunar New Year.
Mr. Huynh Van Xai (Trong Hamlet, Phuoc Hau Commune, Can Giuoc District) taking care of his basil field to serve the New Year market and prepare for the Lunar New Year market
Mr. Huynh Van Xai (Trong Hamlet, Phuoc Hau Commune, Can Giuoc District) has more than 10 years of experience in vegetable growing. Currently, he cultivates vegetables on an area of 0.4 hectares, using the method of intercropping many different types of vegetables to increase economic efficiency.
However, this year, he decided to grow basil, a vegetable with stable prices and popular to the market. His vegetables are mainly consumed through traders and cooperatives with more than 2 tons of vegetables per month.
With many years of experience, Mr. Xai always focuses on improving the soil after each crop. One of the methods he uses is to spread lime to kill bacteria and use organic fertilizer to improve soil quality. He also pays special attention to choosing quality fertilizers throughout the cultivation process to ensure the yield and quality of vegetables. However, growing vegetables is not easy.
According to Mr. Xai, one of the biggest difficulties is green worms, an insect that can attack vegetables at any time. Therefore, timely inspection and treatment are very important to protect the vegetable field.
Mr. Xai hopes for a bumper crop of vegetables with stable prices by the Lunar New Year in 2025, helping his family have a full and prosperous Tet. “Basil is popular in the market, the price is stable, I hope this season will be a bumper crop and bring joy to farmers” - Mr. Xai shared.
Production according to market situation
These days, shrimp farmers in the province are busy focusing on the harvest season of Lunar New Year 2025. According to many farmers, usually, in the last months of the year, shrimp prices increase, so farmers hope for a bumper crop.
Grasping the market demand, Mr. Ung Hoang Phuc (Binh Khuong Hamlet, Thuan My Commune, Chau Thanh District) released 900,000 shrimp on an area of 12,000m2. Currently, he is focusing on taking care of the shrimp to meet weight and quality standards in time for harvest on Tet holidays.
In the last months of the year, shrimp prices are high, so farmers hope for a bumper crop
According to Mr. Phuc, the price of whiteleg shrimp on the market is high, specifically about 190,000-200,000 VND/kg for big shrimp (30 shrimp/kg) and 90,000-100,000 VND/kg for small shrimp (100 shrimp/kg). If the farming season goes well, his family is expected to supply about 24 tons of shrimp to serve the Tet market. To make crop go smoothly, he carefully handles the input stages, from selecting quality shrimp to thoroughly cleaning the pond bottom with lime and chemicals to destroy pathogens, limiting risks during the farming process.
Mr. Phuc said: “Since the beginning of the 2024 crop, farmed shrimp prices have been falling, diseases such as EHP, white feces, white spots, etc have been rampant, while the prices of feed, medicine and equipment for shrimp production have been continuously increasing, causing many difficulties for farmers. I hope that in this pre-Tet crop, shrimp prices will increase and stabilize so that we farmers can end the 2024 crop with the joy of good harvest and good prices”.
In addition to vegetables and seafood, fruits also attract customers at the end of the year. In particular, pomelo is often offered to the family altar during Tet, so people's demand for this fruit is also quite high.
Grasping the market demand, Mr. Pham Hoang Lan (Binh Cang 1 hamlet, Binh Thanh commune, Thu Thua district) is taking care of his family's 120 pomelo trees to gradually sell from now until Tet.
Mr. Pham Hoang Lan (Binh Cang 1 Hamlet, Binh Thanh Commune, Thu Thua District) is busy taking care of the pomelo garden in preparation for the Tet market
Before planting pomelo, Mr. Lan raised the beds and built high mounds to help the tree's roots to be airy, combined with planting at a reasonable distance for the tree to grow. To ensure a high rate of flowers and fruits, Mr. Lan took good care of the trees from the time they first bloomed.
In addition, he focused on pruning branches, creating canopy, and pruning fruit to help the tree bear enough fruit, leaving only fruits of the same size. Every year, after deducting expenses, he earns a profit of about 100 million VND.
Taking us to visit the pomelo garden full of fruit, Mr. Lan said: "The advantage of green-skin pomelo is that it is easy to grow, bears fruit quickly and has a high yield. On average, each fruit weighs from 1.5-2kg. Currently, I am focusing on taking care of the pomelo garden, preventing and controlling diseases, especially fruit borers, so that the pomelos have high quality, and can be sold at a good price. This year's pomelo crop, I plan to supply the market with about 3 tons of fruit".
Currently, vegetable and fruit growing areas in the province are busy preparing to serve the New Year market and the Lunar New Year of the snake 2025. Although the weather in the last days of the year is sometimes erratic, with experience farmers, in general, vegetable and fruit production in the localities is quite favorable. With a fairly large output prepared for the year-end market, farmers are all expecting high income during Tet./.
Currently, my family is busy taking care of the melon garden to serve the Tet season in time. On average, each melon weighs 2-2.5kg. It is expected that my family's melon garden will supply about 4-5 tons of fruit to the market during the Lunar New Year of the snake in 2025. In addition to the traditional melon variety, I also grow the Malay yellow melon. In particular, to keep up with consumer trends, I also write calligraphy on the melons as a message of luck and prosperity throughout the year".
Director of the Agricultural and Aquaculture Services Cooperative of Long Phung Commune (Can Giuoc District) - Hua Thanh Phu
This year, I will set aside 300 pomelo trees to supply the market during the Lunar New Year in 2025. I hope the weather will be favorable, so that my garden can achieve high quality and be harvested on time; at the same time, state agencies will have solutions to support and stabilize the market at the year end, helping farmers have stable output".
