For three consecutive years, Long An province (before the merger) had rice output of 3 million tons, of which high-quality rice accounted for nearly 75%
Rice is one of the main crops in the province, with a total annual cultivation area of over 539,177 hectares. Recognizing the importance of rice varieties in terms of yield and quality, the agricultural sector always recommends that farmers switch from low-quality to high-quality rice varieties. Currently, farmers grow fragrant rice, specialty rice and sticky rice accounting for nearly 53%, while high-quality rice varieties account for 45%.
Mr. Do Van Doan - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ong Nhan Tay Hamlet Agricultural Service Cooperative, Binh Hiep Commune, said: "The cooperative has 21 members participating, with a total linked area of more than 500 hectares. All rice areas are selected by farmers with certified varieties, of which about 30% of the area uses row sowing, cluster sowing and transplanting methods.
Farmers reduced the amount of rice seeds sown from 130kg to 80kg/ha, in particular 60kg/ha; brought 100% mechanization to the fields, reduced the use of fertilizers and chemical pesticides, switched to using organic fertilizers, microbiological and biological products. Here, the Cooperative cooperated with enterprises to purchase the area of spread-sown rice at 500-600 VND/kg higher than outside, and row-sown, transplanted, and cluster-sown rice at 1,000 VND/kg higher than outside. The main rice varieties sown are OM18 and Dai Thom 8".
Looking back at nearly 10 years of implementing the High-tech Agricultural Development Program associated with restructuring the agricultural sector on rice, Long An province (before the merger) has achieved many outstanding results. Specifically, the province has achieved rice output of over 3 million tons/year for 3 consecutive years, of which high-quality rice accounts for nearly 75%. These figures further confirm that the province's rice industry has made great strides in both scale and quality, changing farmers' production mindset from tradition to synchronous application of technical solutions on the field.
With the existing foundation from the High-tech Agricultural Development Program associated with restructuring the agricultural sector on rice, Tay Ninh province (after the merger) registered to implement the Project "1 million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030" with an area of 114,400 hectares, with 47,350 households participating. The project is of special importance in orienting the transformation of sustainable rice cultivation methods; forming and developing large-scale, stable, long-term concentrated raw material areas, ensuring quality, sustainable and effective cultivation.
Tay Ninh province has implemented many pilot models, with an area of about 238 hectares. Initially, the project brought high economic efficiency, people continued to reduce production costs, aiming to reduce emissions in agricultural production.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Dinh Thi Phuong Khanh shared: “The project is considered the most sustainable and effective solution to improve the quality and yield of rice. In the 2025-2030 term, the agricultural sector is determined to implement the project to achieve the set plan, in which it is expected that there will be policies and regimes to form rice production areas. In particular, farmers in the project area will benefit from the exchange of carbon certificates and have a good standard of living, or even become rich”./.
