Exports are increasing in volume and value
Currently, in the province, there are 25 rice exporters, 3 of which are allowed to export rice directly to China. In the first 6 months of 2023, rice export turnover reached 353,859 tons with a value of 182.9 million USD, increased 27.23% in volume and 29.31% in value over the same period. The average export price reached 517 USD/ton, an increase of about 8 USD/ton compared to the same period. The main export markets are China, Singapore, Indonesia, Ghana, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, Africa and some fastidious markets such as the EU (Germany, UK, Netherlands, France,etc), USA, Canada, Australia, UAE,etc. The main types of rice exported are fragrant rice, white rice, sticky rice, Japonica rice,etc.
Hoang Gia Nhut Quang Company Limited (Binh Cang 2 hamlet, Binh Thanh commune, Thu Thua district, Long An province) is one of the enterprises in the province allowed to export rice. According to Deputy Director of the company - Nguyen Nhut Quang, with support from the province, the company can export rice to the world market focusing on quality. Currently, the company has a large material area of several hundred hectares in the districts of Vinh Hung, Tan Hung and some other areas in the west. In addition, the company also invests in many equipment for production.
Currently, the company's main products are fragrant and sticky rice. In addition to domestic sales, the company also promotes exports to a number of markets in Europe, Singapore, Taiwan, etc. In the past 6 months, the company exported about 10,000 tons, an increase of about 20% in output over the same period. At the same time, the selling price is also higher than the same period of 20-30 USD/ton.

Deputy Director of the company - Nguyen Tuan Khoa shared, rice and sticky rice exported to foreign countries mainly served in restaurants, eateries, cake processing facilities, food of all kinds,etc.

In order to maintain old customers and approach new customers, Phuoc Thanh II Co. Ltd. focuses on building raw material areas, stockpiling and constantly improving production capacity. Mr. Nguyen Tuan Khoa said that the demand of customers is increasing day by day. In the past, customers preferred 25-50kg/bag packaging. Now, they prefer 1-2-3-5kg/bag so that after importing, they can put the products into the store for sale without having to divide or repack.
To meet the needs of customers, the company has just invested in a vacuum packaging machine. This machine can stamp production date, expiry date, avoiding termites, insects on rice bags. By the hard work to invest and improve production capacity, in the first 6 months of 2023, the company increased its output by about 20% over the same period, reaching about 12,000 tons.
Building and developing high-quality rice areas
Vietnam has the sixth largest rice growing area in the world. The rice cultivation area in the Mekong Delta (Mekong Delta) accounts for 54% of the country's. Over the past 10 years, Vietnam has always held the third position in the world in terms of rice exports, ranging from 5-7 million tons. In which, Mekong Delta contributes 90% of rice exports. Some varieties of Vietnam's specialty rice have export prices equivalent to Thai fragrant rice. Regarding white rice, Vietnamese rice has recently surpassed the price of Indian and Thai rice. We has also penetrated fastidious markets such as the EU and initially has a brand name.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is developing the project "Sustainably developing 1 million hectares of high-quality rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta". The project aims to form a large-scale, stable and long-term concentrated commodity raw material area, facilitating the reorganization of rice production in the Mekong Delta in a modern direction, meeting multiple goals of improving the added value of the rice chain and people's income, ensuring food security and serving rice processing and export with high efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and highly adapting to climate change.
Based on this project and Decision No.12561 dated December 30, 2022 of the Provincial People's Committee approving the Project on transforming crop and aquaculture demand in the Dong Thap Muoi region, Long An province in the period of 2021-2030, the province registered the rice cultivation area under the project "Sustainably developing 1 million hectares of high-quality rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta". Accordingly, by 2025, Long An is expected to have a rice cultivation area of 60,000 hectares; by 2030, the rice cultivation area is expected to reach 120,000 hectares.
Department of Industry and Trade informed that, implementing the Prime Minister's Decision No. 583, dated May 26, 2023, approving the strategy of Vietnam's rice export market development to 2030 and the Telegarm No. 610, July 3, 2023 on strengthening the implementation of tasks and solutions to promote rice production and export, the Department of Industry and Trade continues to advise the provincial People's Committee in planning, rebuilding the planting area, determining the types and quality standards for each market, thereby, guiding people, cooperatives and enterprises in production and processing to ensure compliance with technical standards of food safety and traceability.
In particular, the Department of Industry and Trade continues to informed rice exporters about the situation and the needs of markets; especially for new markets, markets where Vietnam has signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA); strengthen support in trade promotion through international fairs and exhibitions to consume sustainable products.
It is expected that, thanks to with the planning to redefine the planting area to meet the standards of export rice, support enterprises to associate with rice producers to build raw material areas, the province's rice exports will gradually increase production and value by meeting the standards of fastidious markets./.
